  • DOHC short-cuts

So do you have any short-cuts while working on your z34?
Here's a few of mine I've found out.
You dont have to undo the accelerator cables to move the plenum out of the way.
You dont have to unhook the fuel lines to get the fuel rail out of the way.
You dont have to move the PS pump to get the lower intake off, just use a u-joint socket on the bolt on cyl. 1
You dont have to take the exaust mainfolds off to remove the heads.
You dont have to break both cam cogs loose to time the car, just the fronts (this is assuming your timing is good to begin with)

    any others??????

That sums just about all I know.

I didn't remove heads to replace the oil plug.
I didn't have to prop, jack, move or disassemble the engine on a tune-up.
I leave the air intake in place on minor top engine work.
I didn't have to prop, jack, move or disassemble the engine to replace the #1 heater core pipe (the one that goes to the coolant coletor on the water pump. The only thing I removed was the reservoir, and the wire shield on the strut tower.

I can't think of any more.

You can get to the rear plugs by removing the weather seal, and notching the sheet metal... Probably common knowledge though. ~1"wide x 1/2" deep rectangles would do it. Also... don't try removing the distributor o-ring w/o removing the head, I learned my lesson the hard way (ground off a mounting boss on the head).
Okay now, that's enough of that.

No modification either I am mister slinky.

I only notched the boss alittle and I mean very little. Most mod on that was to the oil plug itself. At least I didn't use rv seal on it, I can remove it. I have had no problem with my oil plug, or the head boss.

I believe the torque on the bolt for the manifold that goes in all the mounts is 18 pounds.

me i just lifted the distributor hole cover until it hit the boss, held it up, ran a bead of liquid gasket, set the cover back down, rotated it a few times, and let it dry.

I can do the rear spark plugs just fine. What I did was back my car onto my ramps and unbolted the dog-bone, the engine rotated enough to get a fat extension down there.

I've also unbolted the dog bone and physically stood on the front cam cover, that rotated the engine enough. It's tiring like that though, hurts the old back.

For some reason my 94' has lots of room back there. Plugs, no notching required heater core line only problem was getting around the alternator.

Did the intakes vary in dimension that much?

I don't know how different they are, but my auto teacher's apprentice / intern guy had a 95 monte carlo and he said it was really easy (compared to mine) to take the heater core out.

I had to cut the hoses off to get them off, so right now I have no heater core because it is a bitch to get down there without taking the plenum off... and one of the plenum bolts was stripped by someone (hmm)...

94+ is different, the engine bay is actually taller. I never had problems removing the rear plugs in mine.

Some one had a pic of a 96' on here. It looked like the plenum went right over the rear cam cover, so you couldn't ever remove the plugs/ wires without removing it.

                      Can't find the pic though.

yeah, but there are only like 10 bolts and 1 vacuum hose connected to that. No having to worry about lost coolant when you remove it. Very easy to do.

Is that the stock 96/97 plenum?! Aside from the polished look, im talking about the shape of it in the back.
