  • HELP! Many problems at once..

    I have a 95 bone stock Z34.

Had no problems out of the car since I bought it back in Feb.

Little over a week ago I started it up after it had sat all day and night and drove about a half a mile away where it sat parked for a good 5 hours before I drove about another block and let it sit for an hour.

When I went to leave it smoked at start up for the first time...By the time I had gone a block smoke was coming from under the hood, and I ended up coasting home as it got hot quick...

Next day I checked fluids and happened to notice that it was around a quart low...Ok I figured there is a little leak that this all have..

Let it warm up and checked coolent flow..which was good..then it started smoking from the rear of the engine and started to get hot..

I killed it and replaced the T-Stat just to be safe and afterwards when I started back up to check temp reading after warm up is when I noticed that it was pouring oil out of the back of the engine....

That explains why oil was lower than it norm would be..

But what was with the smoking and over heating????

Smoke was burning out of my exhaust but has now stopped....

if its over heating it could be a Head Gasket. What color was the smoke.

Black generally is fuel when coming out the tail pipe
    Blueish white is generally oil
    white is generally coolant.

Did it smell like burnt oil? burning coolant smells like burnt waffles/syrup. you can get a tester to see if there is carbon dioxide in your coolant. that generally is the best way to test to see if your HG is going bad. Its really hard to say whats wrong without being infront of the car.

My power steering pump was leaking little bits of fluid onto my belt, which caused a low volt reading and high temp and I also had a worn belt, so when I gave it some juice, smoke poured out from under the hood, I replaced the pump and belt (about 60 canadian in total) and it fixed all problems.

if it was pouring smoke from under the hood and was over heating, it could be the quick connect for the heater line right next to the t-stat . it is just a plastic quick connect and they break and leak right onto the crossover pipe and smoke from under the hood. when you checked the coolant level did u just check the resivor or did u check in the rad too. also the oil leaking down the back of the engine is probably the o ring on the oil pump drive, it has a tendancy to run down the back of the engine when that leaks and they pretty much all leak until you replace the oring with a brown one.

Well I have the plenum and intake pulled and I can def see how bad it was leaking oil...

Problem is just getting to it..I read the write up on replacing without removing the head and I cant seem to get it up far enough due to the head too even manage to slip the oring over..

Also read through how some people have cut at an angle on the tab to get better access..but have been told that will compromise the integrity of the seal and cause coolent leakage.

So I dont know..This is the first time I have ever messed with a dohc engine and I am hesitant on removing the heads cause of what all is involved..

I know it would be best as they are probably sitting on the original gaskets. I am just worried about messing shit up due to not knowing what in the hell I am doing..

I have seen all the different write ups.. maybe I can get a buddy over here to help.I would put it in the shop but damn the parts and gaskets alone are a pretty steep price, I would hate to see what labor would be!

I also just found out today that there is a back plug that is stripped out...so the damn head needs to come off to fix that!

I have attached some pics..one of the famous problem, and some of what boredome and extra cans of engine enamel lead to.
