I'm curious because over that particular cylinder is covered in oil, whereas everywhere else is fully clean. It seems to me it would have to mean something?
Both heads are identical. There is no front or rear head (unless you want to keep the one that came off the front on the front of the engine). If you were to check the part numbers, both heads would have the same number. The cam carriers are different though.

No difference? Well, the front head has the sender for the coolant gauge on the dash, does the rear one just have a plug there for the sender or what?
Identical. 99%+ of engines are like this. Isn't the sender in the lower intake manifold? It was in all the DOHC's I've worked on and my 94'. The cam carriers are different lengths though, the front one to be exact is longer.
There is a plug in the rear. I swapped them on accident and had to install that plug while the head was bolted in. Its a close fit to do it like that but you can.
I ask because on the front bank the cylinder closest to the timing belt (#2, right?) is the farthest from any PCV because it is on the right of the front bank and on the rear has it close to the middle so that could cause some builld up above the #2 cylinder.
The PCV connection is right above the #2 cylinder though, so what would that have to do with anything? Techincally the number 1 and 6 cylinder areas are the furthest from the PCV connections. The oil moves so quickly though that I dont think there is much cause for worry unless you are making short trips only and the oil never warms up enough to burn off contamination and evaporate condensation (if any).
