  • Advice on 91 3.4L Chevrolet motor

My old car ('91 Lumina Z34), now owned by my brother, had run quite well for many miles. Now I'm afraid it may be beyond repair, but I thought I should describe its symptoms to see if there's any chance there's something more to try.

He had just started it and had been driving for less than a few miles, when the motor stopped. He could not get it to restart.

Looking under the hood, it appears the belt tensioner had broken and the belt was no longer working. Pulling the covers for the timing belts though shows they're in good shape, nothing broken there.

We gave the battery a full charge, and tried to get the motor to turn over after clearing the belt tensioner debris and belt out of the way. I can hear the starter solenoid engage, and it sounds like it's really trying to turn the motor (i.e. it sounds strong when it engages), but it doesn't turn over. It's an automatic, so I don't think there's anyway to try to push it.

I'm guessing it's seized, but unless my brother is leaving out a detail somewhere, I can't think of why the broken belt tensioner would cause this. He hadn't really driven it long enough to overheat, and says he didn't drive it after he thinks the belt tensioner broke.

Any thoughts on what may have happened? Is there anything more we should try, or is it likely seized?
