  • dreaded oil leak-back head on 3.4 dohc

My dohc 3.4 has an oil leak coming from the top corner of the rear head- so far we've changed intake gaskets, resealed oil pump drive, and replaced gasket and hoses on oil filter adpater/cooler, it still is leaking pretty badly- it ends up soaking the right frame rail just under and rearward of the engine

question- can the head gaskets leak oil externally on these engines ? It's a 95 GTP

I've had this car to 2 garages so far, and neither can find the leak- seems really strange why they can't find it ? these were 2 really good mechanics both with 30 years experience

    what's going on ?

the last place had the car for 3 weeks, they also changed the oil distribution gasket under the intake (?)- and put a new timing belt on- they said the engine doesn't leak oil when idling, but when taken for a ride and brought back, it is dripping down the back of the engine again on the right side- also now I picked the car up today, and it feels like it has a roll/slight miss- it definitely does not have the power it had, before the timing belt was put on

WOW dont take it back there again
I've seen head gaskets leak out before. Clean the engine really GOOD and grab a Leak detector kit. Its an Oil Dye that is phospherous and usually a kit comes with the goggles and flash light. If still cant find the leak, I would question who did all the gaskets before, because it sounds like they are pulling your leg about the distribution balony LOL

It seems the older you get the less you want to do and the more you want to cut corners lol. No offense to you seniors out there

the last guy said there was a plate under the intake manifold, covering the center of the engine valley between the heads, that has a gasket under it, that's the gasket he replaced.

it has to be a head gasket everything else has been replaced, what else can it be ?

well i have seen 1 head gasket do that be4. also check your cam carier gaskets.

is there any pooling on the top of the engine...like around that oil pump drive plug????

also in that pic you can see the sender for the coolant temp guage.

YES, the area under the intake manifold was soaked, but the cam plug was raised up, an o-ring slipped under it, and permatexed- that is not leaking now, if it was leaking there it would run down that area of the engine, and it is not

it's something on the right side, by firewall, that runs down on the frame

where is the cam carrier gaskets ?

if you look at this archive picture, you can see where the plate goes over the center of the engine, over the dummy cam area- the square container with the hardware in it, is partially covering where the plate goes, that's what the previous mechanic replaced, thinking it was the cause of the leak.

I believe the leak is a pressurized oil galley that goes up to the heads, to feed the cam bearings- in that picture, it's at upper left of block deck surface, and actually has 2 holes and an oval opening in the gasket

              is that pressurized ?
