  • 94 Dohc Camshaft Sprocket Removal

I am in the process of rebuilding my lq1 and i need to know how to get the camshaft sprockts off to change the seals and how to line them back up so the timing is right when the belt gets put back on. I know there is a puller for the 91-93 but how do you get them off on a 94 and up? If anyone can help me out there it would be great.

he has a point. a similiar question can be found on almost a weekly basis for the timing.

the 94+ gears are easy to remove, take the bolt out of the middle, remove the washer in the middle and with a little negotiation the gears come off easily.

Right, so you are saying when you remove the center brass ring the sprocket will come off? how do you remove the brass ring or washer? i believe i have 4 bent sprockets from the previous owner beating the sprockets off with a hammer b/c there are hammer marks on the edge of the sprockets. therefore with the sprockets being bent i believe i am getting a timing belt chatter from the belt getting loose and tightening on accelleration and decelleration. i have tryed to remove my extra set of sprockets off the camshafts and they wont budge. is there a special way of getting these off?

Tap the the sprocket to loosen up the washer (that is not brass). You can try prying with a screwdriver where the washer is split as well but the hammer should do it if you lightly tap it on both sides. Spray it with WD 40 and let it sit if need be (or pb blaster, or whatever you got).

Did it the way you said and it worked great!! sorry i said it was a brass ring i glanced at it and it was a gold color so i assumed it was brass. But other than that when the sprockets get put back on do they go on special or is there a special procedure to do it. such as put sprockets on bolts finger tight, put the belt on, then tighten sprocket bolts and pull tensioner? while all this is happening the cams are held down!!

If it's the same as my '91 3.4L DOHC you'll have to remove the plenum (upper intake) and valve covers and verify that both cams have the "flat spot" (you'll see it) facing up parallel with the valve cover mounting surface. They make a special tool to hold them there but we know the real tool is whoever designed it that way. TDC can be verified by the crank pully marks.
