I want to replace the timing belt on my car(92'LQ1), not mess with the time or anything just replace the belt! I know you need the cam hold down tool to hold the cams in place so they dont move. Here is what im confused about, It seems like I should be able to take the front cam carrier cover off and spin the engine by hand intill the flats are in the right postion and hold them down using the tool. but for the back, if the front cam FLATS are in the right postion to be held in place are the back in the right postion also.. If you so I should be able to just take the UIM and the Power Steering Pump and all the plastic covers off and remove the belt and simply put a new belt on?

The rear cams will have the flats facing down. You will have to lock them a different way, and compensate for both belt stretch and lack of belt tension on reinstall. This is why I recommend timing the motor.

I wouldn't replace the belt without timing the motor

I totally agree with Ben from experience that the belt will even stretch a bit after not too many miles.

Can you use the cam hold down tool to hold the rear cams in place when the flats are in the up postion in the rear?

Yes, but the front bank and rear bank won't have the flats up at the same time.

Ok me and my friend both want to put new belts on are cars because he just bought a 92 Lumina and the belt is messed up little black hairs all over the belt and mine is due for one to They are both 92's and we are trying to avoid pulling the rear cam carrier. Both cars are allready in time and still run fine so what were trying to do is just hold all the cams in place and put a new belt on but we never thought about belt the belt being streched out but we were thinking how streched out can it really be if the cars still run great? we are trying to make some kind of tool to hold the rear cams down while the front cams are held down with the cam hold down tool. does ne one think it is possable>?

I also have a similar problem. I made my own flats tools for the cams and used a harmonic balancer puller to get the front two cam gears removed and lock rings taken out. However on the firewall side head there is no room for the gear puller.

                  My question is this:

Since the rear bank is locked in with flats up and the front bank is free spinning, (also with flats up) can I place the belt on with the #4 cylinder on TDC Compression stroke then Take off the rear flats tool, spin the motor 360* and lock in the front bank?

Is the flats up a compression or exhaust position?

Worked for me. No cam holding tools, no removing PS, plenum, or valve covers.

My first timing belt job in 15 years--and my first ever on a 3.4--and I was all done in 5 1/2 hours. I could do it again in about half that time.
