  • got a little issue with the crossover

I need to get the crossover off of the engine in my 1995 Cutlass Supreme (3.4 DOHC, obviously seeing this is the DOHC area).

One of the nuts that hold the crossover on is rusted out, and rounded off. I can't get a socket on it (because it is so rusted and rounded). Becuase of its position, I can't get a dremmel in there to cut it off.

It is not the bottom one, but it is the back on. It is right next to the tranny fluid fill pipe, and the ABS gets in the way (curse these big hands).

I have tried to even break the stud. I have spare parts, so I don't care if I mess anything up majorly.

Is there some way to get the engine out with the crossover still on? I think that I can move the crossover out of the way enough to get the bellhousing bolts off with a wrench, but is this possible?

This is my new engine that I took a pic of, but I circled the one that is messed up on the engine in the car.

    Thanks

      ohh to get it out

drop the cradle or pull trans out with motor u will have to remove the master cyl and ABS unit and the AC dryer and bracket, trust me ive done it when i first put the motor in my gtp i didnt notice the two bolts on the back of trans mount on the passnger side. o yeah and have you got to the bastard bolt on the bellhoseing , i think its the 2 bolt up in the back u need like a 3 foot extesion to get that bastard!

pullig the engine is almost the same as pulling a 3100 (done that many times). I don't have the equpiment to drop the cradle (otherwise, that is what I would prefer to do).

I might just pull the ABS, and booster, and get a torch in there. I can't pull the tranny. I don't have much time to get this done (only a couple of days), and with some of the things going on with the engine (hidden surprises that I could do without) this is just one more thing that makes me want to scrap the car and get a camaro.

seriously. If I did not love these cars so much I would have given up on them a long time ago, but with all of the work I have just done to the INTERIOR of this car, I am not about to give up without a fight.

Go to K Mart, or Sears....These work very well! The nut either comes off, or you break the stud. 20 bux, I've got a set at work, and with the morons I work with, I use them a lot.

              x2!

The kit you actually need is this, the metric ones are specific:

Irwin sells a similar kit at lowes/autozone:

I ran into a similar problem with a 13mm headed bolt, nothing I did would get it off short of drilling it out.. these extractors did the job and I was very impressed. Using the right size extractor is critical, you may also need to pound it on with a hammer a little for it to start biting.

I went to home depot and got the irwin nut extractor set. Took the rusted one right out (well, the whole stud anyways). Good thing I have a spare set of studs.

I would not have even though of using the extractors. Thanks guys. Now I can continue with swapping out the bad engine.
