  • Pulling a piston and rod

What's the quickest way to pull a piston and rod from a fully built motor on an engine stand?

I have a few ideas, but all seem to involve quite a bit of teardown. I'll have to tear it down eventually, but I'd like to do the piston removal very quickly since it will be over my Easter holiday.

I'm going to send off a piston and rod from my spare engine to have some forged ones built in the next few weeks. If you're interested in parts, let me know. Beware, these will not be cheap though.

    Thanks.

Where are you sending these? By the way the stock rods are forged, all you have to do is shot pean them and they should do the job, as far as pistons you can get hyperutectic by sealed power. They even have the anti-friction coating on the side.here is a pic

I'd thought about just pulling the front head and removing the oil pan to get to the rod bolts. I was unsure if it was possible to do it without removing the head. I thought I would ask in case there was some trick that could make it a bit quicker than I thought.

I'm going to try to use the 96-97 pistons since they are slightly different. I doubt that it will be a huge deal though. Thanks for the offer Ben.

I thought about stock rods and Speed Pro hypereutectics, but they will not get me where I want to do. I'm looking at rods that can handle anything I throw at them (Pauters) plus 8.5:1 compression ratio forged pistons (Wiseco). I'll be doing the build and the guy who built the motor in my S2000 will be ordering the pistons and rods for me.

              BTW-

Shop tools/manuals and rebuild parts have been getting a lot of love from me lately. I'm hoping to have everything finished by late summer/fall.

3.4 DOHC engine mechanical training manual and video from GM

              6" and 12" caliper
              1-4" micrometers
Complete gasket and timing belt kits
              Comp cams valve springs
              Crank scraper
Still working on the rear manifold for a 96-97 motor

I'm still debating the rebuilt 4T60E versus either the stock 4T65E-HD or rebuilding the 4T65E-HD I have. I'm not sure that I want to spend the $$ on the transmission right now. I'm thinking that a 96 wiring swap with my current 4T60E might be the best starting point and then possibly move to the 97 later if I blow the 4T60E I have now.
