  • Rebuilding a 96 LQ1

Just need some pointers.. I've gotten as far as the pistons.. THe oil pan is ready ot be dropped as well..

..ANyone here pulled a DOHC apart to the bare block? What are some things I need to have in order to get the crank out for example? I want to get it torn apart but I don't want to go in too blindly..

..The reason I am tearing it apart is to ave it honed and cleaned.. Depending on how that goes will dictate what I need to get as far as pistons go..

..THe project overall si going by too slowly for my liking, but I had to move out into my own place faster than I would have liked.. THe car is also in my own garage now so no one can yell at me for having my stuff in their way..

I want to have this DOHC as fresh as possible so when I do go turbo (I'm holding off on the turbo because I want a 6 speed more.. And I wanna drive it!)

    THanks guys!

make sure you keep track of which rod caps go on which rods as well as the 2 inside main caps.

you are going to have to 1st pull the front crank sprocket off(assuming you have already pulled the damper) and that whole accessory/timing belt/waterpump housing to get the crank out.

ALrighty.. Like I said, I already have it torn to the block w/ pistons still installed.. The engine is out of the car, so I believe I need a second par of hands to hold the assembly while I pull the whole thing apart.. I am gonna try and get out there sunday (If Im not digging a tunnel to the garage) and pull the water pump accy. bracket thing off.. Which "sprocket" do you mean? Can you show me a pic? I think I know what you mean, but I want to be 100% sure..

Cant get the sprocket/crank pulley off!! How do the rest of youo grab onto this thing to keep the assembly from rotating as I try turning the bolts out? I was thinking of getting a second pari of hands and something to grab onto the pulley with, but I don't know if that would work.. And the flywheel thing: The engine is ripped apart on a stand, not in the car/attached to a transmission..

impact gun will do the trick, if it spins it will still take the bolts out. only other thing you can do it lock the flywheel with some vice grips or something, if the flywheel is still on.

Nah, flywheel was removed becaue I sold the 4T65E it was attached to.. (THe guy who bought it from pulled HIS flywheel off and lost it.. lol..)

I have an Impact wrench.. I'll see if I can get that to work..

I should state I am tearing this down to rebuild it fresh for a Turbo setup!
