  • DEX Cool Issue

Now that I've added DEX Cool to my '95 Monte Carlo 3.4L, I saw posts in here on the DEX Cool problem situation. I did a search and came across this GM study result:http://www.imcool.com/articles/antif...l-macs2001.htm
I know it's from the "defendant", so I'm taking it with a grain of salt. But I do think the reasons they bring up COULD occur.
I've got to decide whether to "go green" or not.
Anybody care to give opinions or other info?

I also found this article with the followiing section referring directly to the 3.4L.

“W” cars. A different bulletin applies to “W” cars like Chevy Lumina, Pontiac Grand Prix, and Buick Century, etc., with 3.1 or 3.4-liter engines. The contaminant in these systems is sealer pellet residue and hose material. This issue is dealt with in GM Bulletin 00-06-02-004. In most cases this is a gel-type deposit and is limited to the sealing surface between the radiator neck and the cap. Cleaning (wiping) the surfaces, testing the cap and refilling properly will usually be adequate to solve the problem. Again, read and follow the bulletin!

Can anyone post the GM Bulletin 00-06-02-004?

Personally I am not a Dex-Cool fan. I prefer the older green A/F for my Oldsmobile 3.4.

The reason is the dissimilarity in metals between aluminum and iron on the 3.4.

Too many horror stories heard about how the metals were attacked corrosion wise.

Want to change a head gasket just add dexcool

        Dexcool is bad news.

It has caused more head gasket falures in more motors.

Quad 4's and northstars and caddy 4.9s.

Coolant breaks down and galvonic action turns steel rings in head gaskets into sacrificial anodes. < they disolve >
When you see white lime like deposits on or around your cap you better act fast.

There is nothing like good old prestone.

I have sevral antique cars and many I have owned for 20 some years.
From my experience using it straight - its embalming fluid for cooling systems.
In a car you drive only a few hundred miles a year it will last over 10 years and look and PH test like new. Ive never had any problems with corosion in any cooling system ran this way.

In a normal car driven every day combustion products get into the coolant.
This is something every car faces and 20 bucks for a couple of gal of any coolant- even Dexcool every other year is cheap insurance.
