  • Help Please Engine Problem!!!!

Hi im new to the forum and think its a great resource site I LIKE IT ..

Ok my problem si.. i have a 1992 chevrolet lumina euro 3.4 wich i bought not to long ago.. so i changed the belt and it was runing perfectly(it had a little misfire once in a while (even after the belt change) but then it stoped when the engine heated.. all the timing is right... so the next day i started the engine and the cilinder 2 does not work and the idle was at 2000rpm.. i checked the spark plug on the cilinder and it had spark and was dry like if no fule was going in.. another thing is that when i turn off the engine and turn it on the first seconds it work perfectly and then it starts to missfire again(number 2 cilinder actualy stops working) and after a few second the check engine lighte comes on and the engine accelerates even more... im checking if there are any vacume leaks or somthing that is keeping the engine accelerated but dont know exacly where to look

iv been cheking if i could of unpluged somthing while chaging the timing belt.. i saw that there is a sensor that if u unplug it the engine turns off.. i think its called a map sensor.. i took it out and cleaned it also chect if it was making good contact..

i dont know it looks more like an electrical problem ill check if its the injector tomorrow..

i dont know if the cilinder 2 not working has anything to do with the high idiel

i live in spain so geting parts for this car is very dificult so anything i can do without replacing parts is better

any tips or advise will be of good help

How do you know its cylinder 2? The computer couldn't tell you that. You need to find out what code(s) it has thrown.

no i checked by taking out the spark plug cable on each cilinder and seeing if the engine starts to fail.. and they all fail accept the the cilinder 2 that if i take it off it makes no difference

first sounds to me like u have a upper intake leak.it doesnt take long for it run terriable.u might have ripped the gasket just enough and once it got hot the crack opened up and is causing that.now with the cylinder not firing,u could just have a bad plug.only thinking that might be the cause and cant remember if the gasket had something to do with it when mine had a cracked upper intake gasket.just a thought.

Could be a cracked spark plug. I had that happen on mine.

            FWIW,
When I bought my 1995 3.4L DOHC Monte Carlo, I was told the front passenger side spark plug had fouled and had to be replaced.
I found later it had a cracked upper intake gasket.

hey thanx for the info i took apart the intake to see if the gasket was broken but when i took it apart it cracked in half so im not soure if it was broken or not.. anyways im replacing that.. and i dont know if i should take apart the injecters just in case there is somthing that could break..(remeber im in spain and i think im the only person here that has this car and there are no parts)

the thing that is realy strange is that when i start up the engine it all works fine the engine doesnt missfire or anything and it only lasts like that 3 seconds and then everything starts going wrong (i can start and stop the engine as many times i want beeing cold or not and it will always do the same thing) the cilinder 2 starts failing till it stops working and the engine get accelerated and seconds later the check engine lighte comes on and it accelerates even more.. its idleing at 2000-3000 rpm

i cant see what codes its throwing i dont have an obd 1 reader

well to me ur saying that the gasket broke in half.so that has to be the problem right there.the new gasket should have little plastic locks that fit into the lower intake so that the upper gasket will not move when it is put back together.replace it with new and u should be set.let us know what happens next.

ok i replaced the gasket i checked all the vacume tubes and tightend them up and i started the engine and it worked perfectly(i used it all day and haded runing for a while)... leter the next day i started the engine again and the same problem idle araond 2000rpm... i was toching araond and diskonected the O2 sensor and saw that when i start the engin it revs to 3000rpm so i conected it again started the engine and it started normal.. then i turn it of and on again and the idle was at 2000rpm.. i took out the senser cleaned it out just in case.. and after a cuple of starts and plugin and unpluging the sensor the idle came down to 900rpm 1000rpm.. and till now its been like that... ok now i got a new problem another one of the cilinders is also starting to fail..

and since its failing looks like all the gas is burning inside the catalyst converter and it started to heat up an smoke started to come out where the gear lever is.....

ok now i just started the engine (1 hour has passed since i last started it again) to show my dad that it was working.. and its idling at 2000rpm...
                  DAME IT... this sux
WHAT THE HELLS WRONG WITH MY CARR!! i think it possesed or somthing

r u sure that u didnt break the gasket again?made sure it didnt move when u were putting the upper intake on?plus did u put new plugs it while u were at it?just thinking maybe the intake gasket is cracked, plus u did make sure u tightened the intake down right/maybe by some chance u cracked the intake.

Look at the ALDL port under your steering wheel. Take a paper clip and stick one end in the top right corner and then the other end in the spot next to it. Turn the key on. The check engine light will flash once, then twice 3 times. This is a code 12 and is the start (all good). It will then flash the other codes 3 times, so count the flashes. When it is done, it will flash 12 again. Get those code and we can go from there. You should disconnect your battery for 10 seconds and then plug it back in and start the car. That should erase all the old codes and give you the current codes. Check it before you erase it and again afterwards. Sometimes codes aren't set until you drive it a bit.

Do you have a laptop? The software is free and the cable is 80 plus shipping if moates.net ships to spain. There are other cables or you can make your own if you want to attempt that. I bought the cable and it worked and tried home made ones with no luck.

Did you replace the lower intake gaskets? I hope so because they are normally the problem, not the upper gasket that split when you pulled it apart. They like to do that after they heat cycle a couple times and you tear it apart.

this is what i found... is this right
DTC - 34 MAP sensor circuit error (signal low indicating high vacuum)

DTC - 35 IAC problem or idle error

the error 34 could be becouse last night i took out the vacume tube while the engine was running then when i disconeted the battery and did it again it didnt throw that error

                          what is the IAC????

I had the IAC go bad in my 3100. The car was always idleing at about 2000 rpm. The simplest way I've found to test the IAC is to unplug it while the car is idleing normally. I started my car and quickly unplugged it before the idle could jump to 2000, and the idle stayed normal for 10 minutes. I plugged it back in and the idle instantly jumped back up to 2000. Replaced my IAC and it was good to go. From what you've described you might have a completely different problem, but it wouldn't hurt to check the IAC out. One more thing, you may need a new IAC now anyway. Both my Chilton's books have bold print saying not to soak it in any liquid or solvent because it can damage it. Don't try and move the valve pintle either, that can also damage it. Good luck.
