  • Getting To The Oil Pump Drive O-Ring

We are working on getting to the leaking oil pump drive o-ring. We need to remove the rear head to get to it.
We have removed the rear exhaust heat shield (such a joy!). We pulled the exhaust crossover and removed the front exhaust manifold. After a search on this forum, I realized it's easier to leave the rear manifold on the head and remove the 3 exhaust manifold to exhaust pipe(?) bolts and pull the rear head with the manifold together.
We checked the factory manual and saw that we are supposed to put 5/32"(intake) and 3/16"(exhaust) fuel hose in between the intake and exhaust cam and lifters. After not understanding where to put them, and not being able to figure out why, I did a search and found out about how the lifters fall out when the Cam Carrier (CC) is removed.
After thinking about it, I realized there are a total of 6 fuel hoses and 12 lifters per CC. That means 1 hose does 2 lifters. And that has to mean each fuel hose goes BETWEEN 2 lifters and underneath the cam. The lifters are grouped in 2's, so that added up. We inserted the fuel hoses between the lifters and the front CC came out with no lifters dropping out. When the rear CC was pulled, 3 lifters fell out. Not too bad.
We pulled the front head and the front pistons look to be in good shape. We'll pull the rear head next.

Cool I just put a towel down on the floor and around the cam carrier to try and catch them. Having the hose would be better but I never have it lying around.

On an engine stand, I rotate the engine so that the head is perpendicular to the ground before I remove the cam carriers. But when I am doing it in situ, I get a bunch of small magnets to hold the lifters to the cam. Works ok, but its a pain to position them. On reinstall, I like to just use a gob of grease on each lobe, this is what they had on the factory engine anyway. They don't fall out if you're quick I'm curious about how the hose trick works too, cause it is a pain any way else I have tried it.

It appears when properly installed, the hoses press tightly BETWEEN the top sides of the lifters and are below the cam. The only thing I can think of on the rear ones that dropped is that the hose was not between the lifters, but above the lifters and below the cam, allowing them to drop out.
One other thing I forgot....we chopped off the end of the hose at a 45* angle to help it make the turn in under and between the lifters and put a light coat of grease on that end. That seemed to help get them started in under. We used needle-nose pliers to push them in.
