  • How doyou test the coils and coilpacks?

    I want to test my coils and coil packs and I cannot find my manual. I need to know all the resistance specs, and testing procedure. Anybody have this info?

        lies.... all lies...... i just did a search for "test coils" and i found a good post about 4 from the top.
        inside that post is a link to a pdf.

        doesnt have to be off or for a dohc either...

              coils are good. Also been trying to check the ICM. Can you test that too?

                Just take that in to AutoZone and they can test it, and it should be free.

                    Autozone *I think* tests them with a multimeter. There was a member on W-body that had his tested, it tested good and it was still bad. Pretty much testing them is kinda stupid because it seems like there is no way to tell unless they are on the vehicle.

                      heat up the metal pad with a torch while tesing on the machine lol
                      do like 10 or more tests... dont go nuts though lol

                        Coil Resistance

                        If this a direct ignition coil......Check the resistance between the two prongs. It should read about 6k ohms or 6000 ohms. Maybe 7-8k....a sign it's going. Anything higher, like 30k and there is no way to fire a spark. Or take the coil/coil pack to a parts store and have them check it.

                          I took my IVM to Autozone today, and they said it was bad. The last time I took one there they said it was bad. I also had them test a few of the ones they were going to sell me and they tested bad too. So I dunno. I went to the wrecking yard and grabeed a few and will try to see if they are bad too.

                          I just did a checlk to see the resistance between the prongs, and every single one I have checked will the same resistance, but I have to flip my tester's leads around to read the last two prongs for the coil pack. Kinda weird.

                            You can always test the negative side of the primary for AC voltage.

                            Seems to me if the coil is not firing try that first, if it still don't fire then well I guess the ICM is junk. It is always good to have a spare coil even if it is a used known good junk yard pull.

                            To where are you testing for resistance? the spark plug prongs?? I don't think testing the secondary will lead to a conclusion unless the coil is removed.

                            Seems to me that the wasted time could have been better used just try and used a known good coil or just simply test for spark the old fashioned way.

                              Autozone's tester is crap. I had mine taken there and tested it twice and it showed ok. Took it to napa and it failed on the first shot. Replaced ICM. Problem solved
                              92 cutty auto with a 97 3.4

                              93 convert with 3.4
