  • throwing serpentine belt?

my fiero w/TDC is throwing the serpentine belt. what would cause that? i put on a new one today and it got shredded to pieces. i'm afraid to put another one on cause this could get costly.

    thanks...

    Pulleys

My first thought would be check all the pulleys. While the belt is off, spin each pulley and pull front to rear. Make sure they are straight. Make sure all the bolts are tight. Check for cracks. Make sure nothing is in the way. Check the centerline of all the pulleys, make sure they are all even. Check for smoothness, no burrs or sharp edges. Double check with two auto supply stores about the belt length. Good luck, Phil

Count the number of grooves in all the pulleys, and the ribs on the belt. They should all match
Okay now, that's enough of that.

        thanks for the info.
i spun all the pulleys and they seem fine.
i bought a new belt today and before i try it out i'm going
to put the old belt back on and see if i can locate why it's
coming off. it's hard to do when you only have one set of eyes.
trying to start the car and by the time i get to the back the belt
        is history.

btw: how many bolts to remove the A/C compressor?

        thanks...

report: i put the old belt back on and it came walking back off when the engine would rev real high. you can see it move off the waterpump pulley.

does anybody know the diameter of the PS pulley. i don't have one it was
replace with an idler pulley. maybe my belt it too long (XXXX725).
could the tensioner pulley not be putting enough tightness on the belt?

          thanks...

Something is not lining up right. I will make a guess that there are 3 bolts for the AC.

The water pump pulley is smooth then.....The tensioner may not be working. Check it with a wrench to see if you can move it, there should be a bit of pressure there. As far as the belt being too long, I believe I mentioned checking with two differant parts stores for the coorect length. Goo luck, keep us informed, Phil

So wait, your powersteering pump pulley was replaced with an idler?

I would get the right pulley on there first.

there is a pretty good tension on the tensioner. i took the old belt to the parts store and they match it perfectly with size and part #.

yes it was replaced. what is the size of the PS pulley?
so i know if my idler pulley is the correct size. i measure
my idler pulley and it was approx 3" in diameter.

                    thanks...

i took off my A/C compressor to see if that might be my problem (probably not) but i wanted the dead weight off anyway. i'm replacing it with an A/C bypass pulley. http://www.napaonline.com/masterpage...By-Pass+Pulley does anyone have a pic of this installed on their car?

                      thanks...

is there a way to tell if the tensioner is bad. mine seems to be holding the belt tight. i don't see any movement when the engine was being rev. are all tensioner built the same, i mean what brand should i get.

                          thanks,

I think you have to modify the A/C bypass pulley to get it to fit right.

Make sure your idler pulley is lined up with the other pulleys...
