  • intermediate shaft gear...

how the hell do i get this stupid gear off?? i'm at school.. we are working on 3.4 DOHC's and i am trying to get the timing cover off but this gear is not being co-operative. I'm guessing from the heads that this is a 94-96 engine. and there isn't enough room behind the gear to put a puller on it. any ideas??

you must mean 96-97 engine, 91-95 are the same as are 96-97. there is a special j tool for pulling that off

        Kent-moore or equiv:

Sproket remover J-38616 used with J-37096 Flywheel holding tool on intermediate shaft and with Cam hold down tools on driven sprockets to aid in removal of bolts and sprockets

Camshaft Sproket holding tool J-38614 for removing sprocket bolts

i just did one, it popped right off with a small prybar and did no damage to the gear or cover

What I do is tap 3 of the holes in the gear with a 7/16" (I think) tap. Then you can use a harmonic balancer puller on it.
