  • Swapping a DOHC into a 96 3100 car

Ok i have a 96 cutlass 2-door with the 3100, i am going to be picking up an engine/cradle combo from a 95 GTP, I understand that the 95 has OBDII sensors? WHat do i need to know bout this swap?

95 is like the 94 I think unless you get a rare 95 that was amost a 96. I've never been real clear on that though.

94-95 is odb1 but doesn't have a removeble chip, and no one makes tuners for them only 96+ odbii computers..

Personally, If you got a 96 3100, you should swap a 3400 that you build up. Since it's a 96 you can likely get a powertuner to tune the engine. You could run a hot cam, and scan and tune for it, or go boost.

The DOHC (will it even fit a cutlass?) is a lot more complicated and you'll have to swap wiring, etc a lot more stuff. a 3400 swap is cake. Just remove and replace really. A lot more stuff for a 3400 IMO as far as parts avalible and you can swap all kinds of stuff onto it like a 3500 plenum or whole top end..

It doesn't really matter if the 95 has ODBII or not, as you'll have to use all of the 95 stuff, computer, wiring harness etc as the 3100 computer cannot control the DOCH 3.4l.

Maybe you are confusing a 3400 with a DOHC and you really want to use a 3400?? In that case you've got the wrong motor. You'll want one out of a minivan, grand am, etc.

Being a '95 GTP, I'd imagine that it's a 3.4DOHC. The LQ1 was an optional engine in a Cutlass Supreme, so sure, it'll fit. I agree that a LA1-? 3.4 pushrod would be an easier swap, but if he's NOT looking to mod further than the swap, the DOHC gets him a lot more power right off the bat.

Either a 1996 engine with engine harness, or put the complete 1995 engine, ECM and harness in your 1996 application.

        1994-95 3.1L VIN M and VIN T's are OBDI, 1994-1995 3.4L VIN X is OBDII or OBD1/2. 1996 3100 are should be full OBDII.

1994-95 3.4L ECM's use several connectors like previous years did, 1996 ECM's uses 80 pin connectors. Also the 1996 computer drives indicators as well, this is a project that will require some body electrical as well.

Ok, I puled the lq1, i have a computer for a 96 lq1, so the 95 engine is supposed to have obdII sensors, so it looks like im on the right path

If anything I think you need new knock sensors if they aren't ODBII, not sure on other sensors.

The 95 and 96-97 do NOT have identical sensors. At a minimum, the EGR is different, the other emissions controls are different, 96-97 uses a map sensor, the alternator is different, the 96-97 have an additional knock sensor on the front bank, and the coil packs are in a different place. The 94-95 are OBD1. OBD2 did not come into W-bodies until 96. This swap is possible and probably not terribly difficult, but will require a lot of wiring diagram scouring and searching of the forums.

This site, L67Swap, and the Fiero sites have good info on weird OBD/motor combos.

If you pull a 1995 engine you need a 95 computer and harness.
