Alright guys, I have access to a 96 Monte Z34 for parts, and I am going to be pulling the OBD2 system out of it.. I know for sure I need the engine harness, computer, and the sensors (Ill be getting new when I turbo the 96 LQ1 I have, but hanging onto them for part numbers etc. wouldn't be a bad idea..)
WHat else do I need ot make certain I have? I *THINK* I will need the whole dash harness as well, but I am not 100% there.. (I'm going to grab it anyway just in case..)
Now, here are a few things that have me worried:
1) I am putting in a 6 speed Manual.. I know OBD2 LOVES to control the transmission, but can this part simply be "programmed out" or given some code to keep the computer busy while I do the shifting?
2) I have the Cutlass Supreme digital UB3 instrument cluster I will be using.. As far as I understand and know about this cluster (DOne a lot of researching on it) is that all it does is use a VFD display to show real data from the engine (RPM, vehicle speed, volts, gas, temp, oil pres.) by lighting up segments of this cluster vs. just sweeping an analog gauge.. Now, knowing this, I figure the cluster will work no problem with the exception of the tach.. The tach on this cluster gets all of it's redline information from the diagnostic link (Orange wire in the ALDL connector).. Does OBD2 have such a serial link in it's system? Can redline information be gotten elsewhere on the system? (THe rev limiter may prove useful somehow-I'm not certain)
3) I want to have a computer built into the car simply for monitoring the car's computer system.. Hide the screen in the dash somehow or in the trunk, glove box, etc.. Just somewhere I can easily view it.. What steps are needed here? I know there is software and connectors out there for laptops, so I imagine I would just permanently wire this into an on-board desktop or laptop wired to a small LCD screen or something..
First thing is first.. I need to pull the OBD2 system out first and go from there.. Like I said, any info anyone may have is greatly appreciated and I thank you in advance!
