  • Premium 6 speaker system

I have a 1992 Olds Cutlass Supreme SL, 3.4L DOHC.. blah blah

I still have the factory system in, but have all kinds of stuff laying around from my Firebird and Lumina.

    What are the speakers sizes?

    I am guessing:
4" or 4x6" in the dash?
    5.25 in the door?
    6x9 in the rear?

oh and the fancy slider bar that adds boost to the bass for the rear speakers.. i guess a real sub was out of the question for GM. (or they would have stuck a 6.5" like that is a sub)

Let me know.. i need to figure out if I can stuff a 3 way system in the front. or if 6.5" components will fit.. I want to keep from cutting so if i need to have it be stock for the "look" it will be that way.

Firechicken.. don't you think i looked there first?

They list a 4" in the door and dash and a just about anything in the rear..

Problem is, it may be a 3.5" in the dash.. definitely bigger than a 4" in the door.. possibly a 4x6, 5.25" or a 5x7??

Rear deck is definitely a 6x9...

My shop manual doesn't say size.. but they show round in the dash, oval in the door and oval in the rear.. so i am scratching my head going hmmm.

I guess I am going to have to take the door and dash off... dash i don't mind.. door.. ugh

You know, that is the best way. Also, when you go to buy your new speakers, take in your old ones and make sure the mounting holes are correct. If possible, if the speaker mounts are removable, take those instead, that way you know FOR SURE. Also be very careful with the mounting depth, especially with the door speakers. I have done a few where the window won't roll down all the way after an install. Because there was no way to shim out the speaker without screwing with the door panel.

I don't know how many times I've tried to install "factory replacement" speakers and had them not fit. They either had the holes on the wrong bolt circle diameter or 4 holes instead of 6, etc, etc. Actually I recently did a car and the speaker mounting hole wasn't even the right shape.

I don't like that crutchfeild reference at all. Because they have figured that with adaptor plates, you can fit any speaker in any hole. Providing it is at least smaller than factory. But I wouldn't trust going by the 'biggest' size speaker listed either.

          Just an absolute PITA.

I'm pretty sure the dash is a 4x6.

The doors can accept 6.5 and keep it behind the carpet but some convincing of the door panel may be needed. Though if you have the factory door locations I believe the largest that fits behind those factory build outs is 5.25". The rear is 6x9.
