WOuldn't you know it.... I have the exact same question. I got the engine in and ready. Took it for a test run and it ran fine at 1st. Once I got going I heard an awsome hiss from the driver side. WHen I got underneath to look it turned out my cat has a hole and is blowing exhaust out the side. Not to mention poor flow from the pipes. I decided maybe the cat clogged and blew out the side. WHo knows.... Either way I am not replaceing it. It's a gonner..... Thanx for any info.

I think that after the cat it is 2 inch. I might be wrong but that is what it looked like after they took the old piping off my Z. I also have a question about cutting out the cat, would it set off any sensors? I really think that it would make it alot louder, wouldnt it? Hey birdman, do you still have the stock mufflers?

It will make it louder, and it won't pass emmisions or safety inspections if you have either of those in your area. It won't set off any sensors as long as the O2 sensor is in front of the cat on your car, if it is behind, you run the risk of throwing something since the cat "cleans" the exhaust. Oh yeah, and it will greatly reduce your backpressure. Hmmm Thats all I can think of for now..

There seems to be a pattern there.

what i got from w-body is that its 2.5 inch before the cat and 2.25 after it then it goes into dual 2 inch i think. and yea i still have the stock mufflers on but ive got other ones waiting to be put on. why? and about the back pressure, i know some cars need some back pressure, do ours?? thanks.

I measured it and bought the cheap exhaust stuff from the parts store (gonna have to work until spring) The exhaust is in fact 2.5 inches before the cat and 2.25 after.

BTW the cat was hosed. I should post a picture of the inlet and outlet of the cat. You would be suprised!!
