  • oil cooler

In all the shop books it shows that the LQ1 has an oil cooler, mine does not have one, whats up with that? Should I get one? and is it as simple as ordering the parts and install?

    Adapter plate
    cooler lines
    cooler radiator

Also, do most people think that the stock tranny cooler is pretty good or would you upgrade? I have a new tranny in there now with 0 miles.

      RE: oil cooler

i think an oil cooler can always be beneficial. they came in 91-93 models only. i don't know whether they were standard or an option. the only 2 reasons i can think of for the 94+ cars not having them was either gm cutting cost or the 91-93 models radiators were too inefficient, b/c the rads in 94+ are bigger.

only drawback is the stocker is a liquid cooled cooler and you'd be alot better off with an air cooled oil cooler.

parts will be adapter plate, hoses, and 2 fittings. one scews into the block and the other replaces that cover on your w/p area that alot of owners mistake for the thermostat housing.

I have never seen a 91-93 motor without one.
There's nothing bad about a liquid cooled cooler. These just suck to flush out. I wouldn't even bother with a used one. Who knows whats in it? GMPD has 'em cheap enough.

Where does the coolant hook in. I know one side comes from the block but I cant find where it comes from on the other side. The engine is in a 95 Monte. Thanx

if u look in your wp area there is a removable cover held in by 2 bolts. it has a pieces pointing down on the 94-97's but it is solid. on the oil cooler motors, it is not solid and there is a coolant port there.

Gonna have to give it a look. I have that cover from the 91 engine. It should bolt right up I think. It will be nice to have the cooler functioning!
