  • a/c delete proto READ

i need someone in the richmond area of Virginia with either a car or a complete 3.4 DOHC engine to test a rough prototype bolt-on a/c delete kit.

i know the bolt pattern aligns properly but i need it on an actual complete (well as long as the motor has the serpentine belt setup in place) engine to see if the pulley depth is correct and id prefer it running to make sure it doesn't reject the belt under rpm/load.

    thanx for reading.

any1 in the Richmond area of VA willing to drive a little ways to help with testing this rough prototype????

i can have it on in about 15 minutes without compromising the factory air at all and i am willing to compensate for gas/travel and provide beverages/food but i will not be responsible if the tester gets a DUI .

basically all i will do is remove the stock compressor with lines attached, set it aside and zip tie it to something solid. then install the proto, test it at idle and rev it some, test it under load and WOT.

after which i will cut the zip ties and re-install the compressor

the whole process provided no major adjustments are needed will take under 2 hours.

also i forgot about that POS shortblock i have laying around. i think i can put it together enough to set the pulley depth, so i may upgrade the situation to beta tester .

So you have a pulley and bracket made up to take the place of the a/c comp? That's great, I was just looking at the old motor I have and was eyeing up the power steering pulley wondering if it could be used to fab up something for the a/c. Let me know how it works out, good luck!

thanx. off hand id say no on that. id think there would not be enough space for an a/c compressor in the pws spot. too close to the intake. if that is your aim i would suggest moving your alt to that spot and trying to mount the compressor in the alt location. that is just off the top of my head though.

after i finish this, if you need help i may be up for the job of fabricating something for you. i could use the experience and of course $$$. what i personally will do is make the blueprint and rough proto and have the finished product professionally made. there is a local company i found that does exceptional work for a good price(good considering it is one off shit) and for a few bux more they can make a cnc program if you like.

well, finished the mockup, only thing i had to wing was the damper, i simply put spacers on the end of the crank until the crank pulley lined up with the others. got a good reading on the delete pulley, bracket fits good, nothing else needed to do to that.

the pulley is a little too deep(i always thought going deeper was a good thing) so 1 maybe 2 trips to a local machine shop and i will go to beta testing and hopefully roll this thing on out and move onto the next thing whatever it may be.

perhaps a pws delete for the fiero guys. this little venture has taught me alot about these type of mods and actually they aren't that hard even for a novice such as myself.

edit: DOES ANY1 HAVE A STOCK 3.4 DOHC WATERPUMP PULEY I CAN BORROW??? all my current testing is being done with the underdrive pulley and may scew the results.

I guess I didn't explain myself very well. I was thinking of taking the pulley off of the old power steering pump and fabricating up a bracket and bearing assembely to replace the a/c comp.

But it sounds like you have something good in the works, let me know how it turns out! And yes, I can ship you a water pump pulley if nobody closer can help you out. Lemme know.

haven't gotten any replies yet. i appreciate it if you would. i'll send you a MO back with your wp pulley. or if you like for your help i could let you beta test it? i talked to the machinist again and he is saying tomorrow for sure.

edit: shit, nvm. i forgot you are in Canada but if no1 else wants to i would still be open to sending it to Canada, just take a helluva lot longer if adjustments are needed.

do you have a stock crank pulley or an ud one?

I'm running an u/d pulley at this time.

i recieved the kit back and the machine shop charged the hell out of me for i minor adjustment. i will mock it up later and see if it is ready for beta testing.

hmm. if you got it for beta testing, would you consider bolting on the stock pulley also?

UPDATE: got the proto back from the machine shop and after i adjusted it, it aligns perfect.

i will have to take it back to the machine shop to get a spacer installed tomorrow for rigidity.

keep in mind that the final versions will not need a spacer and will be machined to spec.

other than that the pulley is a little too small. i will see if they make the exact next size up but if not the end user will have to buy a shorter belt.

Sounds good! If you want to send me one I can get it in and run it on the dyno for you, if you want some solid numbers.
