  • Coil Relocation

Ok we need a guide to doing this, because I'm fucking sick of the carbon tracing I'm getting with the wires run in the stock location. I can't figure out how to run them without having them making contact with eachother, which is messing up everything.

Anyone have a guide to relocating the coils? Without splicing the ICM wires? Because we all know that's a big fat no-no.

What about the newer DOHC's? Don't they have the coils up top? How hard would it be to steal the wiring out of one of those DOHC's and run it? Are the harnesses the same? Or would I have to splice into the main wiring harness?

I just need to see how long the current ICM wiring is...

    RE: Coil Relocation

What's wrong with splicing the ICM wires? Use a decent grade of wire, twist them together then silver solder the connections and heat shrink them. I am certain that would be a flawless connection. I don't think getting a harness from a 96-97 wouldn't work that good. Just because their is so much different between the years.

      RE: Coil Relocation

obviously, you never read my guide. it can be done with your stock wiring. no splicing necessary.

as far as mounting them to a 91-95 intake plenum, that maybe materials for a new guide altogether.

there are only 2 things you need to do.

      1. the wire for the crank sensor, you know how it wraps around the lower end of the motor?

just undo that and run it up and over the rear cam cover.

      2. the other 2 connectors.

that fat harness, going along the bottom of the radiator contains them.

u might not like this but you will have to open it up, untangle and pull the wires back to about even with the wp pulley.

re-tape your main harness, loom your new harness and again up and over to your coils.

next will be a ground wire, i simply grounded it on one of those 10 mm nuts on the strut tower.

      DONE.

Where is your full guide? Or is that it?

I don't care what I have to do as long as it will last.

So to anyone who's relocated their coils... did you extend any of the wires? I soldered an extension into the CPS wiring and that's all I had to do... now... however... it's acting like it's losing the CPS signal (i.e. under throttle it will cut-out/lose spark) erratically. should I redo the connectors and use one solid wire for each lead? Or could this be another problem? This just started a few weeks ago (a few days after I finished the relocation), just haven't had time to work on it.

There was an addendum to my intake swap write-up talking about relocating the coils, but it's to the 96 location. That may not be where you want to go, but it does mention what wires you have to worry about.
I may own a GTO now, but I'm still a 60V6er at heart.

Yeah I know that there you dont have to, but what about the guys that have relocated it elsewhere? I know I've seen someone relocate it ot the radiator support.

Stupid electrical problems... I finally figured out why my car was running rough... apparently the previous owners rewired the CPS and one of the wires' insulation was broken, so I bought a new pigtail and redid the whole thing. I'll have pics next week of the finished product with my new wires... it's still a mess right now...
