1st of all what temp does the oil get to in a dohc engine?

i am thnking about using an aftermarket tranny cooler and was wondering of the originak tranny cooler in the rad can be used as an oil cooler?

    i have reservations though.

like the would running an oil cooler compromise the effectiveness of the oiling system?(since it is already long enough).

would any benefit come of it?

how would this affect the rumored ability of the lq1 to suck the pan dry under certain conditions?

    RE: dohc oil cooler/temps/concerns

    Hello dohcfiend and all

Do not use the trans cooler for an engine oil cooler, the hose conncetions and passages can not handle the oil flow and volume because they are TOO small, and you will starve the engine for oil and burn up the bearings. I have no experiance with sucking the pan dry, but the longer you make the oil supply system the more drains you have on total oil flow due to line and cooler internal friction losses.

If you want an engine oil cooler use the OEM unit, or get a cooler that is designed to be an engine oil cooler.

On cars that I have had with both the same brand and type of engine oil temp and engine coolant temp gages installed, I noticed that the engine oil temp. is usually about the same temp as the coolant temp. when just cruising down the road, (engine oil is also a coolant). However when you start to work the engine harder like pulling a grade, the engine oil temp. starts to climb, it might climb 30-40 degrees suddenly above coolant temp. while the engine is working harder, but cools right down when it doesn't have to work so hard.

If you want to install another trans cooler to REPLACE the existing one in the radiator that is a good idea, the transmission clutches and bands run in oil all their lives, but if the trans cooler in the radiator starts leaking coolant into the trans cooler lines and into the transmission it will wipe the fruction material completly off of the clutch disc's and bands. it seems that the glue that holds the friction materials together is .water soluable

    Hope this helps

      ty. very informative.

what do you think about the combo coolers that are designed for oil and tranny fluids?

i was unaware of the in radiator tranny coolers failing and allowing coolant in there.

also w/out the hot tranny fluid in there would this also increase the effieciency of the radiator to keep just the engine coolant cool?

        bump

trans temps are often above coolant temps correct?

          RE: dohc oil cooler/temps/concerns

          Hello All

Automatic Transmissions normal operating temps. are in the range of 200-300 degrees depending on the area of operation, I.E. City or Highway driving.

There is an awful lot of heat generated driving in the city because the torque converter generates heat by its design and function and there is not much air flow thru the engine bay for additional cooling, on the highway the temp is usually much lower because the torque converter is locked up and not slipping intermally, plus the added air flow helps to lower the temps on everything in the engine bay.

As far as removing the trans oil cooler form the radiator, it would help some, but very little, if you do, you have to install another type of cooler in fornt of the radiator and the heat still effects the collant temps. some. NEVER EVER block off or cap off the cooler lines, the oil that is routed thru the cooler is used internally for lubrication and cooling of the internal bearings bushings and a lot of other parts.

          Hope this helps,

          John

so in closing then a combo cooler would help but not much. it will get bumped down my list then. thanx.bobby.
