  • Is WOT harmful?

Just as the topic says. Running at WOT. I'm sure it's not the best for the car, but what parts really take the beating?

I'm thinking of changing my shift points so that 5K is the cut off. And I'll be adding 3.73 gears sometime soon I hope. Will this kill the tranny? I was under the impression that a WOT shift is better for the tranny because it is firmer and has less clutch slippage.

As far as the engine, what will it hurt on that? Going WOT vs 80 percent, would it shorter spring life if at 80 percent it only runs to 5K and modified shift points would also cut at 5K then the springs would be compressing at the same rate.

This is my daily driver and I'm not afraid to work on it but I don't want to have to replace it in 3 months.

Dude the motor is a maniac above 5K, i think peak hp is at 5000 or 5500. Why prevent it from going there?

Get a 3.1 if thats what you want to do. If you are worried about the springs, get some shims under them and they will work like new or close again. Thats why I just ordered a bunch of them for the store. I wouldn't worry about running it to 6500, stock is about 6300 I think. Get a larger trans cooler if you are worried about the trans, and run type F.

I've seen the posts about the type F but am still concerned. Do you, Ben, know the type F rumor to be true?
Is it ok to run the tranny above 5K once or more a day? I usually reserve that only for racing or hitting the track.

Well, im driving a car around now that has type F in it. Its not a rumor, its been fact for decades now so by all means go for it. The trans will blow up the minute you touch the gas pedal. Seriously man, people do a shitload of a lot worse than go to 5000 RPM with a 4T60-E. I don't go up to 5000 all the time for normal driving, so if all you do is race it occasionally and hit the track now and then, I think its gonna be ok. Just make sure you have a good cooler on there. You could upgrade your transmission, which obvioulsy isn't invincible but can be made much better. For now, if its not acting up I think you will be ok.

Joey, don't you a 97 crate motor in that thing? Dude you should be fine these motors are made to go to 7k, I would worry more about the tranny.

              RE: Is WOT harmful?

Extended periods or frequent high revs will wear springs out. My GP GTP red lined at 7k, orange lined at 6500rpm. Even then they say there is a safety margin that goes even higher but the computer doesn't allow it, or at least mine didn't.

If you are worried about reliability, and longevity then drive it like you can't afford to fix it, or replace it.

personally I don't expect anything to last forever - and I do all my own work - so I drive to get 100% of its potential out of it
