  • EGR bypass?????

i was thinking of having the codes removed on a chip and bypassing the egr.

What (if any) are the pro's and cons of bypassing the egr. does it have any other functions besides heating up the intake and emissions? and what rpm's does it operate on?

thanx in advance for the advice.

i know when i had my motor aprt, there was an over wheling amount of black crap on everything. head ports, intake runners, plenum. pretty cool for something that exclusivly flows air. so no egr helps with keeping the black crap at bay. its supposed to keep combustion chamber temp down, so high compresion can benifit from it by being cooler to avoid detonation. other than the temp control, and emisions, i can see no good reason for it. i'm abandoning it. there was a lot of carbon deposited on the intake valve, which doesnt come from air, that definatly hurst performanc flow wise. i just paid 400 bucks for new valves/seats,guides, etc. no more of the black stuff.

so perhaps timing adjustments might be in order or perhaps a smaller gap or colder plug then? a colder stat? how much am i going to have to compensate or how much heat does the egr dissipate?

i dont think its a big difference. cool as can be is best anyways. i dont understand all the plug temp ranges. but a 160 degree stat would probably do it. you'll know wen it comes time for tunning if you need to retard timing. i had blocked the egr off in my car and didnt notice any adverse effects. my timing was advanced due to the cam, or the motor wouldn't run, but my car only had 8.6 cr.but i still think you should be ok with justdoing away with it. i read on a site where someone tried to put the tdc motor in a j-body, he said he just put a breather filter on the exhaust side of the egr solinoid so the motor just got good clean air when it activated as opposed to just removing it. that way he didnt get the ses light, or the black crap.

I wouldn't use a 160 stat, egr or not. 180 is as low as I like to go since the higher coolant temp also helps with emissions and the engine was designed to operate at 195 anyway. I have had my egr for years now and yes, it keeps the intakes cleaner. I still suck oil up though so a catch can is my next investment for keeping the intake side clean and the oil level normal. There is really no performance advantage from turning the EGR off, just a cleaner intake and intake valve which does help performance. The computer compensates fuel based on EGR open % with the digital EGR though, so despite never noticing a change, the EGR off should in theory lower your gas milage some.

It only operates while cruising around, not idle or WOT.

well the reason i was wondering is i am having a new intake arm made to fit my new tb and i was debating on whether or not to bring over the egr or not. if not i just remove the tube and plug the hole. also it will be a good spot for a wideband if i decide to get one. but if there are reprocussions, then i would take the egr over.

b/c having the egr put on cost more and it gets in the way. i suppose it is settled then, no egr. if it works in peeps cars for years i guess it is ok. but just to be safe i will take my gap down from 45 to 40 and go with a colder stat.

            thanx doubt and sappy.
