  • The prodigal son returns...sort of

Well some might remember me from about 3 years ago. i had done a little tuning to my '96 3100 with big plans to try and mount an M62 on with a custom balancer, custom plenum etc. Well after lots of frustration I went with an L67 swap and started l67swap.com (arch nemesis of 60v6 right?, lol)

No worry, i just bought myself a Lumina Z34 yesterday. Its purdy. Its repainted black, with a gray 1/4 on the bottom and a red pinstripe between them. (looks kinda early '90s intimidator-ish) Red interior, sunroof. A completely shot 3.4, or so the seller thinks. picked up the car for $400

(on a side note I also own a jimmy 4x4 2.8l but its a POS inside and out and im selling it soon anyway)

Well i will be taking a much closer look at this motor over the next couple months. The sellers says the bottom end is locked up and he cant turn the crank. obviously this isnt normal but 1000 miles eariler a new timing belt was put in by a shop. Im assuming they put in new actuators & idlers but wont really know until I have a better look. What are the chances that there is a timing belt problem keeping the crank from turning (wont budge at all)? It wont bother me if the whole block is toast. Fathead is setting me up with several 3.4 parts including a whole block that originated from SappySE and I will probably build up a new motor from that. The motor in this car also has a new water pump, alt, and power steering pump already.

Anyway i will be back to ask about options for making this 3.4 put out a little more power and I know im going to run into trouble on the cam timing.

    Glad to be back.

I doubt its the timing belt setup but you never know. I assume you are going to pull the motor out anyway, so it won't be hard to pull the timing belt setup off and try it again. It could very well be a trans issue though causing the engine to not turn over.

I didnt think about that as a possiblity, would that matter even in park or nuetral? I supposed if something before the gearing is locked up....theres probably no way to tell without pulling the motor or the trans out. Just curious but would a 91 3.1 transmission be different than a 93 3.4 transmission? if not then I already have one but i somehow vaguely remember an "HD" type trans or different final drive for the 3.4.

Yes, the transmissions will be different. The 3.1 should use either the 3T40, or the 4T60. The 3.4 will use the 4T60-E.

so that would also include 96+ 3100s then too. that shouldnt be a problem, i dont have one but their reasonably easy to find.

the 4T60-E electronics changed in 94, so you will most likely want a 91-93 4T60-E. The 3.4 also got the 3.43 FDR and the 3100 had a 3.33 in the w bodies. You can of course go 3.73 FDR with parts from both.
