i dont think the engine itself EVER gives problems... to anyone... my biggest problems on a 300,000+km vehicle are power steering was replaced (my fault, i was doing FWD donuts, back end was on trays, burned an S into the pavement that was there for a month ) that broke my power steering, probably my tie rods and balljoint... maybe my trailing arm too... either way that all broke (the trailing arm for sure was my fault or previous owners fault) The voltage battery light thing is on in my car once in awhile, so is the SES when i downshift... i think it has something to do with electrical but alt. is puttin out 14.7 volts. maybe my ECU exploded... i dont know. And the A/C sort of seized. But the engine is mint, except for a little leak near the back drivers side sparkplug... probably that o-ring thing people talk about, im happy in saying its a valve cover leaking, i'd like to fix it... but...

Thats everything thats happened to my car... in a year... but im extremely hard on it, and the engine is solid as hell, nothings happening to that beast.

I agree, mine is the same way. not a single problem relating directly to the engine. No, bearings, gaskets, O-rings or anything. OK, my valves seals are gettting a little old. Other than that, it is electronic or accesory problems.

I have been more than happy. If you take care of it, it will take care of you. But when you run from 0 to 130, hitting 7100 rpm before shifting, it gives you problems and spins bearings round and round. But that has been my only unusual problem, and I kinda provoked it. Even though we proved that the previous driver didn't help whatsoever...

yeah my biggest problem was when my brothers car spun a few bearings, and blew a few transmisions but when the car gets redlined and held there over 5 times a day can you blame it, it also had 300,000km on it when it happened.i love my GTP's i rarely have any major problems, my 1999 Jeep grand Cherokee Limited has 1000x more problems then all 3 of our gtp's together.

I've had mine for 2 years now, has 125,000 on it. Only problems were very minor and easy fixes. Engine runs like a top. This is a high maintenance vehicle though and you have to stay on top of things. I like DOHCs. Hope to get another in a few weeks.

I haven't had any more problems than with other engines. I like these engines a lot and if I needed another cruiser would have NO hesitation over buying another one. I was a little worried when we got the first one as far as working on it, but once I got over it (also with the help of people on this board), I found the big bad LQ-1 isn't hard at all. In fact in some ways it's easier to work on than older designs. The only thing I haven't tackled as yet is the timing belt and when that time comes I'll dive right in. Because if I have any problems this is a great support group.

Thank you 60 Degree V-6 people!!

Now go have a well deserved beer or 5!

well, i have 149k on my z-34.....i replaced a timing belt once when a pulley gave out, then again when i smoked a head gasket....i should have changed all 3 pulleys, now i have problems again....looks like this weekend the timingbelt comes off again bitch about it is, i have done this 3 times and do not have the cam alignment tools, i did it by eye sight, never sure if it was right, but i want to do it right this time..i see where the book says the cams will freewheel but, i'm lost to this....if i loosen the bolts on the cam gears, the gears will spin and not the cams? if i could figure this out, i'd have no worries..as for my z-34 problems,...battery exploded, steering box, erg valve, head gasket....2 radiators ( damn them plastic tanks) power steering pulley just flew slam off 2 years ago, map sensor, 4 calipers ,heater core..2 waterpumps, front wheel bearings....all this in 3 years and 75k....i'm dreading the alternator going out, and so far my tranny shifts like its
new...but ya know what? i refuse to get rid of it after this timingbelt issue....a fresh coat of black paint is going back on..and 4 new tires and i should be ok till something else breaks.. thank you all for your help

I thought you were the one that emailed me about this...cause of your SN, and the same scenario. Anyway, ill just type it out again. There is a lock ring inside the cam gear, so you have to pull the cam gear off the cam in order to get that lock ring out (applies to 91-93 motors only, 94+ have a much easier lock ring setup that doesn't require the cam gear to be pulled off). You won't be able to get the official cam gear puller from kent moore onto the rear exhaust cam because of the strut tower, so just line up the rear cam first, either with the rear intake cam as well for stock timing, or to whatever timing you want, and go from there. This is how I used to do it before I got the 94 gears on my motor. All this means though is that you have to line up the crank before you install the belt, and its not too difficult to do it this way anyhow. Big key though is to apply tension to the tensioner pulley after the belt is on and before you start turning the crank over to do the other cams. Instructions are on the site for this and I believe even the lock rings are pictured.

all my problems have not been the engine/tranny, but everything around it! poor clear coat/paint, rims could be better, abs would be nice to have....., stupid pk-brake rusted out from the pass rear caliper, and the firewall gromet fire i had and fixed, & 163,xxx miles always looks scary, but it still runs good for the age!

anyone close to NC interested in a 1993 Z-34 Lumina? 149k.....i just put a new timing belt/pulleys on it and realized, i'm tired of messing with this car, this is 2 times in 2 years, ( 2 bad pulleys) ...it has one small dent on the passenger door...probably could use a paint job, but nothing real bad....peeling clearcoat, faded front/rear bumpers...few scratches, the typical.... etc...it is black w/ burgandy interior...tranny and engine are excellent....new rotors, calipers, brakes, steering rack, waterpump, power steering pump, battery, front wheel bearings ....i'm thinking of going smaller, as in like a z-24 cavalier or something...perhaps a malibu.....email me here or at Rockync7@yahoo.com......any resonable offer ony, its not a junk and i'm not looking to "give it away" but i'll be fair...i ask the same...i can take pics if you want...
