  • New engine

    Hey guys, I'm new here and I own a '95 monte Z34. This is my dilemma. I stumbled on this new 3.4 DOHC engine for $1000. This guy ordered it for one of his customers, who put down a deposit and then decided they didn't want it. I'm thinking about buying it to put in my car, even though my engine hasn't died yet. It sounds like a great deal to me, but the downside is that I don't get any warranty with it. What do you guys think?

    Well first of all I'm shocked you got 166k on your original

    Second, yes buy it if it truly is new. Then just wait until yours goes out. A NEW 3.4 for $1,000 is a good deal.

      DO IT. An opportunity like that comes along once in a life time. Having a spare would be awesome.

        So, it seems like everybody thinks it's an awesome deal. That's what I was thinkin, but I just wanted to be sure I wasn't missing something. Thanks for the input.

          I don't. I don't see the point without the warranty. For 1000 you can rebuild a cheaper used block to better than stock. Only if your motor was dead would I even consider it. 166k isn't amazing either, its good but I wouldn't listen to aaron and think your motor is about to die simply from the milage on it.

          If you don't want to take any time to fix up a used engine (that will already have seasoned, which is what I like the most about high milage blocks), then def go with the new one for this price. Its cheap for a new one. Hell, you could probably hold onto it for 5 years and sell it for 3000 at the rate these fuckers keep getting more expensive.

                  I've heard of them going over 200k... most don't last that long because of over-revving or snapping the timing belt... which reminds me... I have to check mine... =(

                    I spun a bearing at 127,000 miles on a perfectly maintained, synthetic oiled, 3.4. And I did not(cannot) over rev it, and my T-belt still looked new when ti blew. But I did run my car harder than many others, and I know for a fact that the previous owners didn't take care of it liek I do mine, but they drove it like I do.

                    But I think that the 3.4, when treated well and maintained correctly, will last just as long as any other motor.

                      What's it say in the owner's manual about the timing belt? Change it at 100K? And how often did you change your oil? As much as recomended in your manual? I can't wait for the person who switched to synthetic in a brand new car to report that it blew up with 15k on the odometer. "But I used synthetic oil and I thought I only had to change it every 20,000 miles!" Or "It looked clean so I didn't change it."

                        Change the timing belt at 60,000 miles. I am not past 10k yet so no worries.

                        I change my oil RELIGOUSLY every 3,000 miles with Mobil synthetic and a $8 pure pne filter. Mobil 1 is the only oil my new motor has ever had and will ever have in it.

                        I don't remember who, but someone hear had his Mobil 1 tested after like 10,000 miles, and the results came back that it was still safe to use. Mobil 1 says like change it every 5-6k, I just change it at 3 to avoid problems.

                          I think a big thing with all GM products is poor quality control. It's a possibility that maybe your crank or mains were not machined properly from the get-go. Or maybe the bearing it's self was not manufactured to par. Main bearings can also fail due to vibration caused from a malfunctioning transmission. As far as the bearing design, it's the best and strongest available. I'm just saying that this type of bearing is used in milllions of engines around the world. So, it can't possibly be the engine design, considering that there are miliions of 60 degree GM engines using an identical bottom end.

                              i got my crate motor for $1500 u.s.d and i thought it was a steal, because over here they are worth $8000 and it was gonna cost me $3000 to rebuild, so i jumped all over that opportunity and it is a real crate motor from gm, it cam with all the sensors and waterpump and whatnot. id say buy the motor. or let someone buy it that needs it.
