Other than the obvious hoist, are there any specialty tools need for pulling the engine out of a Lumina Z34?

Yes, you need to pop those out. Remove the brakes and rotors, and then 4 15mm bolts holding the hub in place. You can pull the axles through the strut assembly with the hub attached. Prybar or something of that sort to get behind the axle to pop it out is all it takes. Some are easier to do than others. You will need to turn the wheel all the way to 1 side in order to get them to clear the sway bar, but thats about it for finally getting them out.Ben

u could just pop the cv joints out of the tranny but you have to re-install the band clamps and they are a pain.
to do that pull back the cv boots and jack up the engine until they are almost out then pop them out with a straight screwdriver. The Official Rotating Mass Nazi

Motor is out! Got a little hairy at the end though. Had the leveler on the hoist, then ran out of room in the garage, so we set the engine back down on the front part of the frame that holds the fenders together, and ran a loop of braided steel cable through it. Then, as we got it going back up, SNAP! the part of the alum. cover that the PS pump bolts to snapped right off. I thought the whole thing was gonna come down. But, now its out.1993 Lumina Z34 - Broke Yet Again
