Has anyone put premium in their car and noticed a difference? About a week and a half ago gas was pretty cheep so i figured what the hell, i'll put some premium in, and after a little while it seemed like there was a little more low end power. Now, thinking about it it seems like it would have just been my imagination, but on that tank of gas I could consistantly chirp my tires at probably 2/3 throttle where as most of the time before I couldn't get them to make any noise at all. I got some new tires about 4500 miles ago, so Iwasn't sure if it was just my tires getting worn enough to lose a little traction when I gave it some gas, but when I filled it back up with regular gas it seems to have just a little less power... Should it actually make a difference?

Going from the cheapest to the most expensive will probably do that. I use midgrade because it works the same as premium for me. On a worn engine, the octane requirements go up because of the carbon buildup in the combustion chamber and on the valves. This is why I recommend using Top Engine Cleaner at least once a year if not twice a year to clean that crap out.Ben

I run 89. 87 makes it run like crap. 93 for me was worthless, I got worse mileage with it than with 89 and less power. But, I have never ran any engine cleaners in mine, so maybe all that carbon has got me up to 9.0:1 compression hahahahahhaahhRobby Whitesell

Something like fuel should require a dyno to get the best comparison....the butt dyno isn't going to be near good enough for the minor gains you get. Remember, the main point of higher octane is to prevent dentation, which inturn means you can advance your timing more, which gives more umpf.
I uses good ol 89 octane mid-grade ethanol blend. Its the cheapest in Iowa due to the lesser tax on it to help promote it. It works.-1996 Beretta

I thought ethanol ate the coating off of the windings in the fuel injectors? Canada is right thought about needing a dyno to get good comparisons. Not to mention weather conditions being different between each tank of gas. If you had the same weather conditions each time you had a different tank of gas in the car, a Gtech might work for comparisons though.-60v6's 2nd Jon M.

I don't find any difference in power with higher octane gas- it would have to be dyno'd to tell. As far as gas milege I have no idea because I drive differently depending on my mood and its not like a V8 so its not that bad on gas anyhow.

E85 will eat the seals unless you have a FFV. That's because it's 85% ethanol and only 15% gasoline. The gas is there pretty much as a lubricant, and to and to discourage someone from trying to get a cheap buzz off of the ethanol. Because it is essentially grain alcohol. Some thoughts that I have heard in respect to higher octanes that going above what you require could result in a loss of power due to the fact that it is harder to ignite, meaning the flame front is not reaching the face of the piston at the proper time, effectively retarding the timing. I would tend to agree with this, even though it only amounts to milliseconds. It could be enough to see a fair amount of powerloss. But, with all the electronic ignition on our cars, it may be able to compensate for the delayed ignition. It would be interesting to do a dyno comparison.
