  • quick question for anyone in the know...

i have a 92 cutless supreme sl with a 24 valve dohc 3.4 litre engine...car runs like a scalded pup, but for some reason in the last month i have had a fan get loose and destroy two radiators. i am sure it is installed right. yes it was tight. i am thinking that those rubber mounts are bad and need to be replaced. maybe i can make up a set of metal spacers to mount the fans farther away from the radiator. but what is the proper clearance between fan and radiator?
and has anyone experienced this problem before?

This is the first I have ever heard of this problem. Grab your fan blades, and wiggle them from the front of the car to the rear (if the mounts seem to be fine). I know when I have had fans go bad in the past, they wobbled something fierce, so I disconnected the one that was doing it, only running on one fan, instead of two. Then the next time I am in there, I remove the fan till I get a replacement.

i had the same problem and these dam rads are not cheap. you have to check the bottom rad support that the bottom of the fans go into it bends downwards very easy. just bend it back up and the fans cant go anywhere!

I also had the same problem. It was the actual blade on mine though, it had nothing to do with how the rubber moutns were. The blade got loose from the motor and every time it started up it drove into the radiator, even tho it was bolted down and such. I just grabbed another from the yard...

thanks guys...it is just really frustrating to have to spend over 400 in radiators so quickly....i always buy brand new parts for my car to save trouble and expense of possibly having to do the job again, but in this case i got bit

Ditto on the 91, and the 92, but mine didn't say hello to Mr. Radiator, so I must have gotten lucky. Anytime those bastards got loose, I would disconnect them so they wouldn't come on and have lunch.
