I recently bought a crate 96 3.4 DOHC from Mease Performance Engineering in NJ for my 95 Z34 and was assured it would be the same. its not quite the same, and its all in and wont run right, does anyone have any experience with this swap who might have an idea what might be causing my headaches? i have over 4k invested in this project so far and am getting more and more and need an to make my life happy again so help me out if you know how!!!! lata

I have heard of people doing the swap, but it was more like a 94/5 engine in a 91/3 Z34. That would give you a few extra sensors that don't get hooked up. Someone here might be able to back me up on this though- the crank position "triggers" on the crank might be different. Something like an X4 (or was it X8 ) pickup vs X24 pickup is coming to mind. You might need to put in a 96 harness and ECM to get it to run right.-60v6's 2nd Jon M.

well im putting a 96/97 motor in my 91, and was told by a few people that it should work no problem. i have also seen another 91 with a 96 crate engine installed and it ran perfect. they just had a few sensors laying around that wernt used. what do you mean by it wont run right? what is it doing?

its got a little bit of a skip to it...not running smooth like it should. and i drove it up the road, and i have to really step on it just to get it up to like 30 mph. it has no power. the car used to chirp second gear before i blew the 95 motor. so yeah, it doesnt run smooth and has no power in a nutshell...thanks

What I was talking about is the crank trigger. I thought on the later engines had sent a signal to the ECM (I could be wrong) and it used it for fuel injection and timing. If the ring on the crank is different on the later engine (more notches aka triggers) then the earlier engine (less notches) the ignition control module is going to be confused (the CPS sends a signal to the ICM and not the ECM as far as I know). It's kinda like if you put a different rear end gear in an older RWD car, your speedo will be off. Same kind of deal here.-60v6's 2nd Jon M.

Have you not tried going back to the place that sold you the engine? WHat kind of guarentee do they have? I know whenever I get something done at a shop (which is rarely cause it's so damned expensive) I never take the time to diagnose any problems with their shitty work (read pep-boys) I just let them deal with it.
What I'm getting at is tell them what your problem is, they should be able to help you, seeing as it's their engine.--Rob

ok heres the latest guys...i checked into what you were talking about Pocket-Rocket, the 95 came with the 7x and 96 had 24x. so i still have the 95 ECM and stuff in the car. but the 96 motor. so what would i do to fix that problem? would i replace the ECM to match the 24x? thanks again for all the help

heres the thing, the 24x sensor is under the harmonic balancer, does the 95 have a sensor behind the balancer? because the crank sensor on the back of the block should be the same. isnt it? the 96 motor has 2 crank sensors , i dont know much about the sensors on the 95 motor , but if you do have a sensor behind the balancer couldnt you just change the balancer and the sensor with the one from your 95 motor? i dont know where the sensor picks up the info but im guessing it gets it from the blancer. well thats my input. i hope it works for you, and i hope mine doesnt give me any trouble.

You could get out of this easy and swap in an engine bay harness and ECM with one from a 96 Monte. Well, I guess it is a case of easier said then done, lol, but then at least all your hardware would be matched. Any 96 or 97 DOHC harness/ecm would work since they only came in W bodies (Lumina, Monte, GP's in 96, 97 went to the L67)-60v6's 2nd Jon M.

http://www.car-part.com/ would be a good place to start. Most of the places that work with them are decent on their prices. I had looked up all of the 96 intake stuff, and it came up to just over $150 I think. Called a place about 40 miles away and they wanted about $300 just for the manifolds, not including the other parts like the arm the TB mounts to, the fuel rail or other things.-60v6's 2nd Jon M.
