  • How many turns (steering), lock to lock, 1991 GTP?

I'm going nuts trying to find a new steering rack. My original rack leaked and I replaced it with a used TGP rack which has a close ratio, I believe 2.25 lock to lock. It was nice while it lasted but being 20+ years old the seals gave.

I don't know what the factory ratio rack is for a 91 GTP. Is it 2.75 lock to lock?

I think I am going to get a rebuilt steering rack and Advance Auto lists a 2.75 lock to lock rack.

I have a 3 turn lock to lock rebuilt rack lying around that was briefly in the car and it was awful. Felt like a '80s Caddy. Will 2.75 be more normal? Is that the factory ratio?

Hopefully they have the correct ratio in the box, I've had problems with rebuilt racks in the past from the big box auto stores. They sell you one ratio but what you get in the box is whatever the remanufacturer decided to put in it that day.

2.75 is the normal GTP rack. 2.25 for TGPs. I think 3 for SE grand prixs.

I've also heard about not getting the right rack in box for auto parts stores. Good luck! LOL.

Thanks for the reply. I bought the 2.75 rack online from advance auto, went to the store and sure enough 3-1/8 rack. The woman behind the counter started to give me some attitude on top of that as I explained this was not the rack I bought. Luckily the manager was close by, fully understood the issue and did his best to find the correct rack - with no luck.

I'm making things simple and getting a used rack.

I bet the wrong rack in the box (almost sounds like an old time childs toy :P) is from people ordering one type of rack and tossing another type in the box. In this case pull one out with this ratio and put one back in with that ratio.

If the dealer has it they would probably charge you more than the entire value of the car.
Best bet is a scrap yard.

Try your local auto parts store

I'd recommend against the local parts store - see post #3.

They give the same part number to all the racks. It is a complete crapshoot on what will be in the box. They'll sell you any ratio you want but it is no guarantee that is what is in the box. And if the person behind the counter can't comprehend it is very frustrating. Happened to me last night and the woman behind the counter just couldn't understand. The manager did.

Might have better luck at a Napa or Carquest.

i go to orilieys for my parts cuz they give discounts to students at my school and some of my friends from school work there so they know what im talking about and will pull it out of the box and check for me i just want a close ratio rack for better conering and quicker response

Good idea to have them check it at the store. Be aware that the remanufactured racks do have some oil in them. When you put a wrench on it and turn it will blow off the plastic dust caps over the high & low pressure ports and spray oil everywhere (ask me how I know). Throw a heavy rag over the ports.

It won't make the car corner better but depending what rack you have now it may make the car feel much more "sporty."

I would say that if you already have a 2.75 rack that works correctly it is probably not worth the cost and trouble. Remember you will also need to have an alignment afteward. I went with the 2.25 TGP rack because my rack needed replacing anyway.

                    Good luck!

I'm sorry, I had to lol. That's kind of like when Ben and I were putting the newly ported and polished heads (Dremel style way back in the day) on the 91... I had just bolted the power steering pump in and was messing with something else when he decides to give the power steering pump pulley a good spin before the lines were on it and out shoots a small ~1/4" stream of power steering fluid like a geyser hitting the under hood insulation mat...
