why the 3.4 at all?

The 3.4 NA produces right around 200 hp.
The 3.8 NA produces right around 210 hp.

3.4 - DOHC nightmare
3.8 - single cam with chain.

What exactly did GM think the benefit of using the 3.4 would be?
As the 3.4 takes a mess of cams to come close (but still fall short) of the 3.8, what was it really worth?
Not like the 3.4 is THAT much more gas efficient.

oh, and the L67 runs like ~7 or 8 PSI to make a whopping 240HP, right? the LQ1 at the same pressure ratio will make somewhere around 300HP.

How about the simple answer:

"To compete with the Ford Taurus SHO having the Yamaha-designed and built DOHC V-6."

As supplied in stock form, the Yammie engine probably put out a few more ponies than the GM unit; and did it with less displacement (3.0L). The Japs definitely know how to build a powerful DOHC engine. Eventually, the Taurus SHO got a DOHC V-8 (but it had significant problems.)

The main problem with the Taurus SHO is that it was based on...the Taurus. What a shitbox.
