Haha, I was gonna say something about that...I too saw that the engine was tilting pretty heavy on that stand. Good call!

Yeah, 5 speeds can be fun, but not when you are short toes. Besides, then you can't do heel and toe foot work

Glad to see we've got a crowd.. This is is going to be a pretty challenging build! I don't think im going to be able to work on it much until sunday, but i plan on dismantling the sub frame and getting the rotating assembly out. well prep which ever parts are going to the machine shop and what ever we can clean on our own will be cleaned at the local car wash!

Crank and pistons are out. it was too dark so we didnt get a look at the condition of the rings but from the looks of the cylinder walls they seem to be doing just fine. The rod bearings has a little bit of wear, but there was no exposed bearing material yet. Hopefully the motor will go to the shop monday for cleaning.. Now we really need to get on getting that 97-97 heads and up parts.

Since it's apart, throw new bearings in (I'm sure you planned on it already, if not, google engine bearing crush). And plastigage plastigage plastigage! Also you can use SBC cam bearings for the intermediate shaft in the center of the block. There will be one in the set that is too big, but if the DOHC intermediate shaft bearings are anything like the pushrod cam bearings (should be identical) they don't take up the whole bearing bore and SBC bearings are wider than our normal bearings. Don't use a regular black rubber o ring for the distributor plug either. A new brown one (meant for our engines) can be had at the dealer for around $3, and for added precaution I also use Chevy 350 distributor gaskets with silicone under the head of the plug. On the newer heads be sure to check the exhaust valve guides to make sure they haven't slid down. I bought a pair that had this problem, and out of the few others I know of that had a set torn down had the same problem. One guy had posted about using bronze BMW guides and having a groove machined in them to put a clip in them to prevent them from falling down again.

Block should be back tomorrow. Well probably get the short block assembled this week/weekend. Also, the subframe is completely stripped. Its currently freezing raining out, so until we get a decent day the subframe is going to stay nasty as hell.. updates coming soon.

Machine shop called today, they ordered my cam bearings and finished hot-tanking the block and timing chain cover. The bearings will be in and the engine back in the garage tomorrow, time permitting(I have to work in the PM). I ordered new conrod and main bearings today, those will all be here, along with the timing kit(New belt and pulleys) on the 6th, so the bottom end will be back together on the 25th. I'll be getting a micrometer tomorow, and some bore gauges, so I can spec the crankshaft, conrods, main journals, cam, cam journals, etc.

                        Plastigage plastigage plastigage! lol

What sort of belt did you get? If you are turning any kind of high RPMs with this thing I hope you got a Gates or Dayco.

You are going to have a hard time fitting a micrometer in between rod bearings and the crank to find the clearance for oil... Plastigage is just as important as a micrometer in an engine build. It costs a buck or two, you can't afford not to use it. But you knew that...
