  • 3.4 to 3400 swap with 284 5-speed...doable?

Hey guys, just wondering if I were to swap a 3400 out of a Grand Am GT or something (got lots of those cars in our junk yard), would the 284 5-speed trans bolt up to it? I have a 3.4 DOHC/284 5-speed Grand Prix. Thanks guys!

of course it would, and you'll be able to change your alternator in 15 minutes VS 6 hours!

I'd use your stock injectors and most of your engine harness should work fine, you will need to get a chip because the DOHC spark advance tables are way different than what the 3400 likes (also the VE is different).

you may have mounting issues, but those are fairly simple to get around.

I'm just wondering if the 284 transmission will mount to the 3400...I know I can get the 3400 engine in there fine. When the 3.4 goes, I don't think I want to put another DOHC motor in the car.

Yes, the 284 will bolt up fine.

you'll have to use the flywheel and the bolts from the DOHC.

I've got that down to about an hour!

To the OP check out this thread: http://60degreev6.com/forum/f136/swa...or-3x00-t44387

this is in regard to swapping out a 3.4/284 for a 3500 LX9/284. The 3400 swap should be a bit easier but a lot of the info in this thread is the same. Also search for a thread by PCguy who did a similar swap. My swap is in limbo right now - I've collected about 95% of the parts including the engine but I don't have garage space to work in now.
