  • 91-95: 96+ diffrences?

Well, I was waiting in the junk yard for the forklift to come around to finally pull my 93 Lumina engine off the cradle, after I spent 3 days pulling itout of the car 100% intact, and I figured I'd pull the filter just for chuckles..... Full of bearings
Neway, all for the best, the guys getting me a 96 1/2(1/2 signifigant?? he thinks it is) 60k motor out of a totaled car, it comes in monday.

Now the question, I know there are MAF, intake, and exaust manifold diffrences, but what else? Compression, HP/Tourque? Is the powerband diffrent? Revlimiter?
    Just curious.

P.S Its going into an 861/2 Fiero GT 5 spd

This is all from what I have heard, so none of it is 100% true.

The 96+ made 215hp, compared to the 200hp of the pre 96 auto motors. The pre 96 autos had 9.25:1 CR, and the 96s I belive had like 9.5 or 9.6:1. The same powerband, just bumped up about 500rpm.

There are a lot more, but I do not want to say becuz I am probly wrong.

I have driven a few 96s and a lot of pre 96s. To me hey feel the same, with the 96s holding their pull to their shift points a little better, while the earlier nes fall off. The earlier ones also felt a little stronger below 3-4k rpm.

96/97 have 9.7:1 compression, 215 hp. The powerband is raised 1000 RPM, and the heads have weaker springs in them. The lifters are smaller, the belt is a better design, the intake manifolds are larger ports, the heads have a different combustion chamber and exhaust port. EGR is different type, crank/rods are the same but different pistons. Different oil pan, relocated DIS coilpacks.

Thats all I can think of right now.

hey what tranny are u going to use with this swap? is it a lumi 5spd or the fiero 5spd? also u wouldn't happen to have a 4t60e laying around would u?

          o and i don't think 96's are maf. that is only 94-95.

Yes, 96+ are MAF and OBD 2. You will need the lower/upper intake with extension and Throttlebody on the new motor. Hopefully it will have it. You will also need the 96 exhause manifolds, I'm not sure about the crossover pipe and downpipe, but they are probably the same. Oh, and hopefully the motor comes with the vacuum lines as well. There are 3 or 4 that run from the Throttlebody to various components and since the TB is further away from the Plenum than 95 and earlier you will need them or you can cut your own.

oops my bad. the one i scavenged from at the yard didn't have a sensor and i saw a sensor in the neck and was told it was a map. i looked at another 96 pic and saw the maf. my apologies.

Im pulling it myself, so Im taking everything I can attatch, pile on, or stuff inside the engine
I always pull my own engines, mainly because Ive seen those guys pull em You're lucky if they dont cut every wire in the engine, and burn a hole in the pan cutting the mounts off. Its not a pretty site, really.

Im going to be running the Fiero Getrag 5spd, and I used to have a 4t60e, but she went with my last stripped chasis to the crusher, sorry, I was downsizing

the reason i was asking is are there any differences in the 2 mounts on the tranny/diff? i don't have a 5 spd or the rescources to get one at the moment. and i was wondering how much shit i was going to have to go through to stuff a 4t60e in it? hell if the mounts are the same the rest will be left to the grinder and tourch.

it's no biggy though one day i will find out on my own. when i am finished modding this 3.4. keep me posted on the swap.thanx.
