  • 94 91 engines, tranny

i have a 1991 cutlass 3.4 and a 1994 cutlass 3.4, the 94 is just a parts car for the 91 and will be scrapped soon.

my question, is the 3.4 engine in the 94 a direct bolt on to the 91, wiring and all. no sense in scrapping it if it will fit fine, ill beef it up and toss in it.

1 thing i have noticed about the 94, is its much slower then the 91 i have, can anyone give any insight, both cars mechanically are fine, the 94 is just much slower.

any differences in power between these years engines?

also with the trannies, same question.

    thanks in advance

Here's a link to my first post EVER!!!
It's about a 94 engine and a 93 Z34.... I'm pretty sure everything will apply to your question.... As far as Tranny goes,,, not sure what year the T460E was introduced.. If the 91 had a 4T60E then you should be lookin good..... I'm sure someone that knows more will chime in....

The answer is in the third post,,,, AND,,,, no, I didn't use the 94, I ended up getting a 93 engine (59,000 mi) and using that with a rebuilt trans......
    Hopefully this helps,,,,

4T60E was introduced with the DOHC, and it was the only automatic tranny offered with the DOHC until the very end, when I am pretty sure the 4T65E was an option.

        the 1991-1996 DOHC's had a 4T60-E and the 1997 had a 4T65-E.

the 1991-1993 where all the same.. MAP based ECU (OBDI), 1994-5 MAF/MAP (OBD 1.5) 1996 MAP/MAP (OBDII). the 1994 has a cam position sensor and a MAF, but if your running a 1991 ECU it will not be used.. shouldnt be a problem IIRC. But i don't think it will work the opposite way.

I think both are rated at the same power... I know the heads, intakes are the same... Dunno about the cams... I know at a local dyno day we had about 5-10 DOHCs and some where much stonger ~10-15hp, then others for absolutly no reason...

I would say the power difference is probably in the timing. I know my 91 used to pull like a raped ape, then Ben shredded my timing belt and we got our crash course in LQ1 timing belts. After the new belt went on, the car idled much smoother, but didn't pull as hard or high as it did before. Another thing could be internal wear like rings, ect. Do a compression check on both, but then again, timing being off on the one can change the compression reading.
