  • 1993 3.4L DOHC Ignition Coil Relocation?

    Hi,

I have a 1993 Cutlass with a 3.4 DOHC. Last May, I had the 185,000 engine replaced with a GM replacement 3.4 DOHC crate motor I found.

Yesterday, the engine just stopped while driving. After I had it towed home, I found the DIS 10 amp fuse blown. I changed the fuse and it blew again, so I figure I have a short in the wire or in the spark module itself.

About 6 months before I had the motor changed, I had to replace the spark module and recall it was not an easy task since for 1993 the coil packs and spark module are on the side of the engine beneath the exhaust manifold.

Has anyone moved the spark module and coil packs to the top of the engine somewhere like I think the '96 3.4 had?

If so, how did you do it, how long does it take, how much does it cost, and was it worth it?

    Thanks

    Scott

i have seen alot of guys mount it on the bar on the passanger side going from rad. support to shock tower. I mounted mine to the radiator support using the stock bracket (bent mounting tabs flat) and tapped stock holes on the support. its a Pain In the Ass to get it out. then i extended the factory wires and walla. its easy to access and if something fails its simple to replace.. i had to remove the front exhaust manifold and some other crap to get it out..

You can get the coil pack out with the right tools and not remove anything else. You'll need a few different ratchet extensions 6" and 10" a 12mm(or 13mm?) socket and a ratchet of course. The way I did it was get right under the car with your feet to the rear. Make sure the car is up on jackstands so you have lots of elbow room. A good trouble light and mechanics mirror are needed as well. Use the light and mirror to see where the three nuts are located holding the mount to the engine. then put the socket and socket extensions on the nut by feeling for it and then when you have a good bite on the nut hold it there with your thumb and put the ratchet on and take the nut off. Expect to swear a bit. You might want to degrease the area if you have an oil leak there and then use a penetrating oil. After you unclip the ICM wiring you'll have to untape the wiring to move it up to the top of the engine.
