  • 91 Z34 No start condition

Hey all I recently picked up a non-running Z34 from my buddy who left it in my driveway for 300$

He parked it originally because it had issues with stalls and the ignition cylinder is jammed not allowing the key to come out.

I'm trying to get it started since it's starting to get a bit warmer this week. All the car does is crank, no signs of life. I smell gas so I am assuming fuel is not the issue. I don't have the proper tools atm to test spark but are there any problem areas of these cars I should know about? Sign of jumped timing/broken belt? I'm looking for suggestions on what to try as I'd like to get it running this week.

    Thanks, Joe

If it matters, the car is a 5 speed.

it could be a few things... 1st check fuel with gauge.. then pull a plug and set it on metal and crank, you should see spark. if you have fuel and spark then it could be a few other things... Crank sensor, timing belt.. pull the plastic cam cover and look at the belt. if its all frayed and messed up it would most likely be the t-belt. but allways check for fuel and spark. any codes, I assume its a 1991 or 1992 cause its a 5spd.... (use a code reader or use the Jupper and read the "check engine light" flashing)?

Thanks for your reply. I don't have a gauge handy or I would have checked for real fuel, so unfortunately for now I'm going by the smell. I will be checking for spark soon and will check the timing belt. When the car was running my buddy said it stalled and had trouble staying running. If I have fuel but not spark is the CPS ruled out? As far as codes, no reader, where's the jumper at? I didn't take a real good look at this thing but I'm assuming the computer is under the dash somewhere as I saw a diag. connector. I'll look deeper on my days off and report back.

if you have no spark, theres a good chance that its the cps, its VERY common on the 60* engines.

Someone suggested something about the lock cylinder and the chip in the key? He said if the wrong resistances are detected there will be no spark or fuel going to the car. The lock cylinder is jammed as stated, could that have something to do with it?

Just tried checking codes...put the jumper in once I connected the battery...heard the rad. fan cycle on. A few seconds later POP and smell of smoke I guess with the key being stuck in 'on' already it blew something up . I'm waiting on a buddy to get a steering wheel puller up here so I can get the broken cylinder out and a new one in. Will update on progress later.
