1991 Cutlass TDC

good day to all, came across this site googling some info on my 1991 cutlass project car, tons of good info!!

like to pick a few brains if i could, heres some background..

buddy of mine had 2 cutlass supremes, worked out a deal and i now have the 1991, but theres something different or so it seems about this car..

its UNGODLY peppy, ive been in many many good running V6 'ers, but this 1 was a shocker..

as i stated my buddy had 2 of these, this 91, and a 94.. and to be honest the 94 looks miles better then this 1 does right now, but we lined em up on a country road, and this 91 flat out smoked the 94, the only discernable diff i can see, is mine says Twin Dual Cam, where his says Dual overhead cam (not sure if it means anything)

the 3.4 was put in a lot of diff vehicles, and ive been in several, none felt as good as this does..

did olds have anything sneaky up there sleeves in 91 on a select few cutlasses ?

right now i have the interior completely gutted, and new interior ready to go in, dash will be replaced with a newer style cutlass as the carpet on the shell is to 80's for me, but i will be keeping the digital guages.

after the interior is done, its off to paint.. and after that its tuning time ( wish it had a manual tranny )

ill post some pics up in the morning on my progress, and look forward to any info you all may have on this car.

rear shot, and yes that is a decklid and taillights from a 94 on the 91, had to do a little cutting to make them work, but i think it turned out good.

now after a month, and hunting down a better interior (not perfect) heres what it looks like.

















i dont think it turned out so bad, but far from done, the interior i picked up has some issues, ill find a local shop to fix those, ill be moving the entire steering column to match the interior.

the dash shell is next,



then tossing in the new shell and reassembly of the dash, i like the look of the charcoal interior far better then the worn out grey it had in it.

mechanically the car is pretty sound, was throwing a MAP error code, but after 2 minutes of digging, found it just came unplugged. or course all fluids changed also. will be doing timing belt ASAP also.

fresh brake pads and rotors all the way around, rebuilt the rear calipers myself, and whoever thought up the threaded pistons on the rear needs a good a$$ whoopin, what a pain.

the car isnt a real head turner as far as looks go (yet) but as i stated earlier, what caught my attention was the performance of this beast, couldnt see it going to the scrapyard, so ill keep you all updated as to my progress.

finish interior, minor mechanics, then paint.

Nice car and welcome! If the MAP came unplugged from the tab on the plug breaking (one of mine had this happen....) I put some silicone around the weather proofing seal and it kept the plug in the sensor without a hitch.

The Cutlass Supreme didn't really get anything special as far as engines go. The difference between the ones that say TWIN DUAL CAM, and 3.4 DOHC V6 is mostly changes in the COMPUTER system. The TWIN DUAL CAM ones are the older ones used from 1991-1993 and the 3.4 DOHC V6 ones are 1994-1997. The 3.4 DOHC V6 ones are SFI, but the older TWIN DUAL CAM ones are MPFI.

I have a Freak one as well. My 1995 Cutlass Supreme will spin the tires. In EVERY 3.4 DOHC car that I have ever been in, this is the FIRST and ONLY one I have driven that will break the tires loose. Every 3.4 DOHC that I have driven had NO bottom end power and would not break the tires loose. Not even my friends 1992 Grand Prix SE with the 3.4 DOHC and the 5-speed manual would break the tires loose.

must have been a monday at the factory when the computer was tuned/made and was done wrong.. HEHEHE

Don't want to scare you but lots of guys new to the 3.4 should know it's hicups. Next time you have the air-box out check under the plenum between the throttle body and EGR valve for the distributor plug. If your lucky someone has already had to fix this issue on your engine. But get a good look at it so you know where it is. Do a search on this site and read about it; if it ever starts to leak oil like a bitch then this is probably where it's coming from. 'O Distributor Oil Pump Drive O Ring Fix' It was the first problemI had with my GTP.

Local guy had a 92 that would roast them pretty good. My 94 would break them loose occasionally at 35 or so if I got a perfect downshift, and it would light them up decent from a dig.

1991 3.4 dohc runs kinda!

Ok How do you ck Timing on a 1991 3.4 DOHC Olds, Floods out (or it acts like it) dies slow to take off when you jump on it motor runs ruff . Oh when it Dies most of the time it wont restart ! Only has 97000 miles cam belt looks good Think it's new just bought car had to put a trans axle in it due to no reverse. Only $1000.00 in it so far don't want it to be a money pit ! Book I have on car don't show 3.4 timing or firing order has a in line coil pack. don't even Know where # one cyl is front or back of motor OH have no codes showing & have fixed vac leaks !

The CS was the only W body to get the High Output 2.3 DOHC Quad 4 and 5 speed combo.

with some shot tires I can roast from stop all day but with some meaty ones it'll just give a good chirp and take off

#1 cylinder is the back passenger side. To check timing you need to remove the carrier covers and verify the flat spots on the cams, to do it right you'll need to remove the belt and just retime it. A few hours and a few you'll be fine
