    Is this Valve to Polished??

    Should I dull it some..

    I was bord okay.

Opps I ment to put in DOHC, but I supose this question can pertain to both.

What did you use! wow, thats a mirror now. Im not really sure on the difference it will make for mirror polished, or just smooth.

This valve is lapped by hand using 220grit/320grit/600grit/1000grit/1500grit/Aluminum polish and about an hour and alot of down force while holding it level.

This Stainless is hard and sand paper. I used 320 first then dropped to 220 then to 600 and stayed there for about 500 passes then 1000grit for a few passes and 1500grit to finish off the surface for 300 passes. Used Aluminum polish (although it didn't matter) on the back of one of the sand paper sheets.

It is swirl finished you just can see the consentric circles

I was thinking about doing this to all the valves, that should give me plenty to do for at least 24 or so hours lol.

BTW it was wet dry sand paper, I also have some special stuff that last s forever.

I think the more polished the better. Better heat reflection, plus the smoother the surface the stronger the face will be. Shit, that must have taken a long time.

I am not sure how these SIvalves were forged, but there are alot of pits, and unlevel spots that I didn't like.

Almost seems like they were press casted, then dropped forged, and machined stem...Well the angle's were sappy's work.

Yeah, thats why I said they needed to be polished. I would polish the stem where it is still raw looking too.

Whats the benefit of those valves over stock? What if you polished and did a high end angle job on stock valves? Could you swirl polish your valves, is there a benefit or is it just the smooth surface that helps?

I dont have any idea if there is a benefit to them or not over stock. Im going to see what the machine shop can do with stock valves for my car since I can't afford 35 a valve for some that are all done up. Im still lost on the whole swirl polish thing. WTF is that supposed to do, especially the intake side. Carbon deposits are gonna take care of any polished look you have in a matter of 1000 miles.

What did you have done to them Ben? The angle on the back of the face of the valve tapered?

Did you weigh the SIValve before you had the work done to it? If so, how much did it weigh vs. the stock one?

It was close, they weighed about 2 grams more before I had the angles cut on them.
