    well if you know how many miles are on the belt dont go over 60,000 miles or 100,000 kms. you can check for cracks, frays , alot of oil, and look for alot of black hairs. your best bet is if you just got your 3.4l or dont know how many miles are on the belt just change it. it is cheap and will save you a big headache and possibly a motor in the future. if you car has less than 60,000 miles on it then it has probably never been changed before. they usually only go a few more miles longer than that before they break (depending how hard you drive it).

      u can measure the distance from the tension pulley to the tension, there is a spec on it

        Be safe, if you don't know, by all means, CHANGE IT! Saves a tow bill. Fortunately the DOHC returns the cam to a neutral spot to keep from damaging valves unless you are at high RPMs.
        If you are driving a Chevy, everything else, is just a blur. 3.4 Carbon Footprint.
