I am doing the OBDII swap as I am typing. I am about to install the second Knock sensor but I cant get it in without relocating the ICM. I would like to know, does the ICM get grounded to the block through the aluminum plate?? I already have the wires up next to the plenum, I just need to make a plate to hold the ICM. I just dont know if the ICm gets grounded through that plate, or the plate just holdes the ICM in place??

Your coils go on top and the knock sensors skrew in to the block on each side of the engine. The braket and the plate thats made from steel do ground it to the engine.

Since the ICM is all plastic except for the heatsink area, and the bracket is aluminum, I believe it is not grounded through the bracket. All the diagrams I have show one of the ICM wires as a ground wire. I'm pretty sure either using the original bracket or a modified heatsink should be able to work without a ground.

Thats what I was thinking. Dave, on your 96, where was the knock sensor located? Also there is no steel plate for the ICM its aluminum. Dave did you get my PM??

the ICM is grounded to the plate which is grounded to the block.. it also acts as a heatsink.
Moving the whole setup off the block is a great idea, helps keep the ICM temps down and makes them last alot longer.

How is that so. I had paint on my block and never got a miss from the coils.

OK, so i have to ground the plate that I mount the coils to. It shouldn't be to hard.

my plate is bolted to my strut tower brace, i doubt you would have the room for something like that but alot of people have bolted them in random spots in the bay.. anything to get them away from the engine.
you may have to extend some of the wires depending on where you move it.. but that's easy stuff, just make sure to solder them.

A while back I was going to go to the short Coolant Overflow (even picked one up in a yard at the 60v6 meet in Canada when we went to the junk yard), and mount mine right beside the ECM. My only hope is I don't get a ton of interference from the coils in the ECM.-60v6's 2nd Jon M.

the pushrod 3100/3400 has a nice bracket that your ICM should bolt up to, alot of people have used those with good results.

I dont think it grounds to the block.. I mounted mine here without any problems.
Moving them with the pre96 harness is kinda hard. Moving then with the 96+ harness is extremely easy.

doesn't ground through the aluminum plate, there is a single black wire with an eyelit in it that needs to be put on a good ground.
with that in mind, you can mount them just about anywhere in the engine compartment as long as the wires permit. The Official Rotating Mass Nazi
