  • HELP!! - electrical?

I have a 95 GTP (3.4L), and it has a problem. I am no mechanic, but I am just curious as to what could cause this.

When running the car on the highway, it will periodically have a drop in RPM (about 500 RPM everytime). It just does it out of know where. I'll be cruising along at about 110KPH, or 120, and all the sudden it will just drop 500RPM for no reason. The car goes through a sudden jerk, then it regains the RPM and is fine. Sometimes it will do this 2 or 3 times withing about 15 seconds. It only happens once and a while. Can anyone help me?

sounds like you have a torque converter clutch lock up problem. how many km's are on the car?

the car just rolled over 170K. If this is the problem, how would I check this?

well first off check your tansmission fluid, it runs through your torque converter. you can check it by hooking on a KOER(key on engine running) diagnosis to it and drive it, it will tell you if it is engaging or not. now im not sure how you would fix it. i would have to look into that for you.

Jake has the right idea you need to capture some data from the ECM (engine control module) when the symptom is occuring. Also check for any codes
a good diagnostic tool is invaluable when trying to chase an intermittent
            problem

you need to get a diagnosis computer that plugs in under the dash. the one i use for my car is made by OTC. but i would call your local dealership they will diagnosis it for you and it should only take an hour so the labour cost wont kill you. and KOER is a test not a piece of equipment it is a display off all your cars functions on the screen of the machine.

If the problem does turn out to be a TCC solenoid, you will need to drop the drivers frame member to get to the trans side cover. unbolt the cover and the solenoid should be staring you right in the face. A new solenoid will come with two wires and connectors. Just cut the old solenoid wires close to the old solenoid and wire according to color. This is actually pretty easy to do. the hardest part is removing the rusted frame bolts. BTW have you ever replaced the spark plugs, wires and fuel filter?
If it\'s fun, it\'s probably illegal and if it\'s illegal I\'m probably doing it.

No I havn't gotten around to that yet, that was supposed to be my next investment in my car, but I'm a university student who doesn't start work for another 3 weeks, so that has to wait at least a month

Your problem might also be the governor kicking in to control speed. What is 120KPH mean in miles per hour?

could the timing belt also be causing this?

does it jolt during acceleration? or have a huge power loss? those are timing belt related problems.

power isn't quite what it used to be, and it does jolt sometimes
