  • tranny swap

i have 93 cutlas conv. with a DOHC. it has the 4t60e in it. i wanto change it to a 5 speed and wondering about if i have to change any harness or what to do with the tranny plug

  • #2
If you reuse the auto harness you gotta:
    -lengthen the VSS wires
-jumper the starter wire across the range switch plug
-if you want the reverse lights and trunk release to work you have to wire them in

Other then that you leave the 2 tranny plugs just laying there.

thanks for the help but could you tell me what wire colors to connect or cut and what vss means. i got all the parts from a 89 GP, shifter ,cables, pedals ,master/slave assembly. don,t have a tranny yet but will probably go with a 282 is there any thing else i need and also where can i find a flywheel for the 3.4 that isn,t to pricey

Everything on the 3.4 is pricey, get used to it. I would honestly suggest just buying a 5-speed car, it will be faster, easier, and without any problems.

Yeah, but he has a 93 Cutlass Convert w/3.4L DOHC. I dont even think they made the Cutlass converts in 5spds, did they.

And looks who talking .. Then why dont you go and buy a car with headers on it.

I'm sorry, but if you are asking these simple of questions I don't think that this is a project you will want to undertake.

VSS is the speedo pickup on the tranny, passenger side with an auto, drivers side on the 5spd.

With the 282 tranny, be sure to get a performance clutch as the stock one WILL NOT hold. The flywheel can come off any internally balanced 60v6 motor, I think its 88+

That is what I was hinting at, I just didn't want to go right out and say it. Thanks Dave for doing it for me.

a 282 might be some trouble. The gearing will be strange if it isnt off of a quad 4. Dont the 282's and the 284s use a different type of master/slave too?

Why would the gearing be strange? I find the 3.61 to be just fine (I've driven it on a Pushrod, and a Quad4, but not a 3.4 DOHC)

With the 282 and 3.61 gears you should easily hit 70 MPH in 2nd gear!

That 3.94 gearing is only in 91 W41 cars, and in 92-94 Quad4 HO cars.

                          The 4t60e does that...

There is a reason that the 284 was engineered with ratios to where at 7000 rpm in 2nd gear you're at 60mph.The 3.4 has a sorry low end, now if you're 2nd gear goes to 70, you're first will be around 40. By having it at 35, you get into the powerband faster, adn the shift into 2nd will drop you less rpm that with the 4--70 shift.

I do not think you're ready to do a tranny swap, nor do you know why you are doing it. If you are doing it to be able to shift yourself, than fine. If you are doing it for performance, the 70mph 2nd gear won'te do anything, except allow for slightly better launches becuz you have a clutch to play with.
