  • Do NOT buy the GM 1997 Monte Carlo Valve Springs!

gmpartsdirect lists a valve spring for the 1997 Monte Carlo 3.4 DOHC. I had this spring tested out and its pure bullshit.

    1.400" installed height = 65#
    1.030" Max Lift = 155#
Coil Bind recommended by the machine shop was 1.130"!!!

At 1.030 where max lift on stock cams is, the bottom three coils are collapsed and there is only marginal room for the top 2 coils. This means that there is damn little to give after 1.030" and they are close to total coil bind.

Im going to look for another source, as well as see if I can get an answer from GM about this.

      From GMPD.

These are the correct springs for a 96-97 w-body vehicle with a 3.4x engine.

      W*04

The part is covered by GMs 12 month "parts warranty". If this part is in fact bad or defective, you should be able to get the warranty claim processed by a local GM dealer.

The dealer's service department will need a copy of the invoice, the VIN for the vehicle the part is for, and the current mileage on the vehicle, to process the claim. They may also need to verify that the part is bad by diagnosing the part on the vehicle.

I told them the specs are wrong on them and I wasnt sure what the return policy was. Obviously my email was beyond their grasp of understanding....oh well. Id like to have another machine shop spec these out as well so I guess ill hold on to them for a bit.
