  • Starter Problems On My 94 GTP Maybe Wiring Issues?

I am having some problems with my GTP. When i start it up for the first time (cold) it kinda lopes starts slow. Then when i get it to normal operating temperature and shut it down and go to restart it up (hot), it starts like the battery is dead. It lopes really hard and turns over slow.. I have changed the starter to a newer mini starter and it does the same thing with the old one and newer one. Also i am having problems with wiring, i think? The dash lights dont light up, the sound from the radio cuts out when door opens or closes, and now im believing that there is wiring issues with the starter. Oh and i have also remember when i put the negative cable on it has a little spark when it makes contact.

It would be great if anyone can help me out.. Thanks in advance!
    Robert

probably a ground problem. i would upgrade the charging and ground wires, but have the battery and alternator tested at auto zone or something.

what do you mean by upgrading? I had autozone check the starter and alternator before i installed them on the motor before the motor was put in. I have a optima in it for now that has 780 C.C. i also have 2 autozone batterys that do the same. I did put a new rebuilt motor in the car. Possiblity the timing is a hair off?

I'd go through and check all of your ground wires, especially if this started after the new engine.

Well today i cleaned all the ground wires that go to the transmission. 4 small wires and 1 big one that comes off the battery. while i was at it i cleaned the core support one and the actual battery connector the one on the battery. i also cleaned the postivie aux terminal, and the postivie terminal on the pass fender. still the same result slow cranking.

try a different battery. Optima is not really that good of a battery. Stick a 78 series in there and see if that does it. Another way to find out is have someone park next to you and hook up jumper cables like you are going to jump your car and see if the added boost helps you out. If it does, then replace the POS optima with something better.

I feel I have a right to call optima POS after I had one EXPLODE in my car.

Not to hijack, but what do you mean by that? I've had my Red Top for 5 years now. Every winter it gets deep discharged and every spring it fills right back up with power and gets back to work. I've used it to start a school bus that normally needs 2 batteries.
I may own a GTO now, but I'm still a 60V6er at heart.

I had a red top many years ago that went bad after a few months. More recently, I had a yellow top in the Beretta. It sat for ~6 months, and it was completely dead when I tried to start it. Made several attempts to charge it (slow trickle charge, fast charge, and "jump-start" charge) and could never get it to work again.

besides the optima battery being used. I have another battery in it now, and it will do the same thing... slow cranking.. I hooked up our battery charger to it and put it on booster and it still did the same thing.. same with jumping off another car.. Would anyone know if fuseable links can cause this? Like if they were just about to go? Its the only thing i can think of.. thanks guys
