well i can definatly see the problem lol

not familliar with dohc, but maybe its a belt tension issue ?

is that one gear upper right, saposed to look like its more out ?

    warped head maybe ?

      holy crap!!!

at least it was caught be4 the belt broke but it also looks like the pulley in the middle is crooked.

no, its just the angle making it look crooked. Belt tensioner/pulley setup maybe, but its hard to tell since that is all rusted now and who knows the condition when it was fresh.

I don't know what happened, but mine did the same thing--tore off the outer 3/8" of the belt in ~20K miles.

The dealership charged me full price to re-do their mistake. And I was stupid enough to let them.

From now on, I'll do my own timing belts using the full timing belt kit (belt and three pulleys)

Mine ran fine. Went to the dealer because the alternator died; they pulled the timing belt cover at the upper front and showed me the timing belt was all chewed up.

So I wound up with both a timing belt job; and the alternator.

To me the tension was not set right, or they didn't make sure the belt was set right before actually starting the engine. Looks as if they also failed to rotate the engine manually several times to verify.

I am leaning towards a tensioner problem.

Im jumping on the tension bandwaggon, but I have to say, where the hell is the boot on the tensioner assembly? The reson I think the tension wasn't set properly is by looking at the position of the square nub on the tensioner pulley, I usually expect to see it at a 4 o'clock position, as opposed to a 5-6 o'clock.
Like others have said, if the idlers bearings go the belt will walk out like that.

Is poor servicing of the belt that caused it. I mean, a missing boot on the tensioner is a pretty stupid and blatant mistake made by the technician, let alone the fact that they probably never gave the tensioner pulley the little tug it needs to set proper tension on the belt, and if it was the idlers, they should have been replaced with the belt anyway.

maybe you jumped timing and its not creating compression at the right time.
